SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

And you thought politicians and sports agents were the only who take part in exhausting, high-level dealmaking. The average parent spends 67 hours per year “in negotiation” with their child, says a new survey. 2,000 parents in the US took part in a poll which looked into the food-related battles and compromises that happen regularly in homes with children, and found the average mom or dad strikes 5 bargains with their child every week. Kids drive the toughest bargains at dinnertime, and 5-year-olds were found to be the pickiest. And what are they pickiest about? Not wanting to eat vegetables was found to be the #1 reason for mealtime bargaining, mentioned by 37% of parents. The smell of the meal was next (33%), followed by “not liking the way it looks (32%). On a happier note, the foods parents said their kids rarely turn down were: pizza (76%), chicken nuggets (73%), French fries (72%), mac and cheese (66%) and hamburgers (58%).

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Let us rejoicify: “Wicked” has finally made its way to streaming! Released in theaters ahead of Thanksgiving, it grossed over $700 million, and after a VOD release to ring in the new year, the movie musical is now available on NBC’s streamer, Peacock. Wicked got 10 nods at the 2025 Oscars, and took home 2: Best Costume Design for Paul Tazewell and Best Production Design for Lee Sandeles and Nathan Crowley.

“The Flight Attendant” and “The Big Bang Theory” star Kaley Cuoco is set to lead the new series “Vanished”, which is expected to be the hottest new show available at this week’s Series Mania in France. Starring in the suspense drama alongside Cuoco will be Sam Claflin, known for his work in “Peaky Blinders”. The logline reads: “When a romantic getaway to Paris takes a dark turn with the sudden disappearance of her boyfriend ‘Tom’…’Alice’ is plunged into a web of intrigue and danger, uncovering shocking secrets about the man she thought she knew.” Production is expected to begin next month.

Ben Affleck claims his divorce from Jennifer Lopez was “drama-free.” In GQ’s April cover story, he insists that fans’ “eyes would glaze over with boredom” if they sat down and talked to him about his seemingly “sensational” life. Affleck went on to address his headline-making split — while denying Lopez’s documentary about them caused a “major fracture” in their romance. While he admitted he is “more reserved and private than” his ex-wife, he said he participated in the 2024 project in order to “love and support” her. Affleck emphasized that he has “nothing but respect” for Lopez, and the end of their marriage contained “no scandal, no soap opera [and] no intrigue.”

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Last week, the World Happiness Report named Canada the 18th happiest country in the world. The US is 24th. Finland is #1. The top 5 are: Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, and the Netherlands.

Have you ever heard of the term “pretty privilege”? That’s the idea that people who are better-looking get more advantages in life – and it is definitely a real thing, according to a survey. A recent survey of 1,050 Americans found that 81% believe that pretty privilege exists at work, affecting everything from who gets hired to who gets that next big promotion. And 67% said they have seen someone treated unfairly or talked about negatively because of how they look. Here are some other interesting findings from the poll…

When asked to rate their own attractiveness, the average person game themselves a 7.7 (out of 10).

37.5% of men rated themselves a 9 or 10, while 27.4% of women did.

Entry-level employees were least likely to think of themselves as attractive (65.5%).

Almost all CEOs – 99.8% – rated themselves at 7 or above.

Why is this important? People who rated themselves as very attractive reported earning an average of $64,000, while those who saw themselves as unattractive earned about $44,000 — a difference of about $20K.

It’s just what your kids need: Candy that glows in the dark. Treat-maker Mondelez is packing its Sour Patch Kids with turmeric-extract, which makes the candies fluorescent when exposed to blacklights. The company said the idea was inspired by observing how much Gen Z loves glow-in-the-dark elements in other settings, including DJs.
