SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
The results of a new survey make you kinda wonder why there’s so much hype leading up to the Academy Awards. Among the 10 Best Picture nominees for last week’s ceremony, 48% of adults haven’t seen any of them. The survey of 2,000 Americans found that although Hollywood released over 500 movies last year, the average adult has only seen 3. And as you might expect, Gen Z and millennials said they watch twice as many movies as Baby Boomers. Among the older generation, 43% said they didn’t see a single new movie last year — in theaters or streaming. Leading the pack among favorite Oscar-nominated films was “Wicked”, with 31% having watched it, and 41% saying it should win. A little more than half (54%) said they are more likely to make the effort to watch a movie after it receives an Oscar nomination or a win.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
“Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” is returning to theaters. The fan favorite entry in George Lucas’ “Star Wars” prequel trilogy is coming back to the big screen on April 25 to mark its 20th anniversary. According to the announcement: “The film will run in U.S. theaters and select international territories for one week only and will be available in several formats, including, for the first time, 4DX.” 4DX features high-tech motion chairs that sync with special effects, to complement the narrative of the film.
Carrie Underwood is getting set to remind people of her “American Idol” origin story ahead of her judging debut. She’ll lead the web series “Idol to Icon”, which will be released as a companion to the ABC show. Underwood will take viewers back to 2005, when she kept a journal throughout her time on Idol. The series will feature her reading journal entries, and covering fashion highlights and behind-the-scenes moments. It started airing on YouTube March 4, ahead of the premiere of Season 23 of American Idol, on March 9.

OF THE DAY
A study has found that pessimistic people actually live longer than optimists.
What can I get you? A beer? Wine? A can of tree sap? That last one doesn’t seem to be a likely question, but Canadian producers are hoping that tree sap will be the next ‘must-try’ trendy drink around the world. As you know, maple syrup is made by boiling down the sap of maple trees. But what many DON’T know is that you can drink the sap itself, which is called “maple water”. The stuff contains just 2% natural sugars, so it isn’t nearly as sweet as syrup. And now, a small number of producers are selling maple water in bottles, cans, or cartons (‘sap-wrap’?) – following a filtering and pasteurization process to purify it. Makers point out that it is a natural drink, and they hope it can take some of the market share currently occupied by coconut water. And the taste? Yannick Leclerc of Maple3, a producer based in Quebec City said: “People feel like they’re drinking the wild Canadian forest.”

✓ Because the speed of earth’s rotation changes over time, a day in the age of dinosaurs was just 23 hours long.
✓ One of the asteroids seen in “The Empire Strikes Back” is actually a potato.
✓ Spiders recycle webs by eating them.
✓ Lobster’s bladders are in their heads.
✓ At one point, “Jay” was slang for “foolish person.” So, when a pedestrian ignored street signs, he was a “jaywalker.”
WEIRD NEWS
Driving drunk is never a good idea – but doing so when you’ve already been taken home by police is downright “astonishing”, say authorities in Port Moody BC, after a man allegedly did just that over the weekend. Cops say an intoxicated guest at a wedding became agitated after Good Samaritans took away his car keys to prevent him from driving. That resulted in a fracas and a 911 call. The man was arrested for breach of peace and police drove him 20km home to Vancouver, where he was expected to remain until he could sober up to retrieve his vehicle. But, alas, the man made the drunken decision to “order a rideshare back to Port Moody, get into his vehicle and drive”, a police spokesperson said. The man was caught at 3:50am, speeding at more than double the limit – directly in front of Port Moody police headquarters, no less. He faces numerous charges.
