SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

It turns out your parents were right when they told you to get some sleep and “deal with it in the morning” – because that’s when you’re probably at your best. University College London researchers analyzed data from almost 50,000 people, and results showed a trend of people generally reporting better mental health and well-being earlier in the day, with less severe depressive symptoms and increased happiness, life satisfaction and sense of self-worth. On average, people feel worst late at night. Most evidence shows that late morning is the best time for problem solving – and that mood is relatively stable at that time as well, making it easier to handle tough topics with a level head.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

In a shock announcement, Amazon MGM Studios says it is set to take creative control of the “James Bond” franchise. The news — which is sure to shake and, indeed, stir the film industry — was made Thursday, alongside word that long-time producers and custodians of 007, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, are stepping back. As per the agreement, Amazon MGM Studios, Wilson and Broccoli have formed a new joint venture to house the James Bond intellectual property rights. The 3 parties will remain co-owners of the franchise, but Amazon MGM will have creative control. In semi-related news, ex-007 actor Daniel Craig has dropped out of consideration for the title role in DC’s upcoming movie “Sgt. Rock”.

Awards season continues to be a wonderful time of year for Cynthia Erivo, who is now set to host the 2025 Tony Awards. In a statement, Erivo said she is “looking forward to ushering the theatre community at large through a night that celebrates the wonderful performances we have witnessed throughout the year.” Nominations for the 78th Tony Awards will be announced on May 1, and the ceremony itself will air live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 8 on CBS and Paramount+.

The trailer is out for “Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie,” a buddy comedy-documentary hybrid chronicling the career of the iconic stoner duo. In the clip, we see Marin and Chong driving through the desert in a black Cadillac with a marijuana leaf hood ornament. Marin asks: “You sure we are going the right way?” Chong snaps back: “We’re in the middle of (freaking) nowhere.” Marin responds with a deadpan look, and responds with: “No, we are southwest of (freaking) nowhere. We’re not in the middle yet.” Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie opens nationwide on April 25. LINK: https://youtu.be/yFZaR4ubS20

DID YA KNOW!?

Did you know a mailman made a castle in France? Le Palais Idéal is an 85-foot-long, 33-foot-high castle located south of Lyon made from rocks that a 19th-century French postman picked up during his mail route over the course of 34 years. Even though the mailman had no formal architecture training, he built the castle himself including the pillars, grottoes, and flying buttresses. Today, the massive structure still stands and visitors still go see it today.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study says that teens who spend most of their time listening to music are more likely to become depressed.

X owner Elon Musk claims the latest version of X’s AI model, “Grok 3”, is the “smartest AI on earth”. Grok 3 was released on Monday night. Based on Musk’s previous comments, users can expect Grok 3 to perform better than OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which is run by his rival Sam Altman, and better than DeepSeek, the Chinese AI model that recently appeared, as well as other well-known models. Elon quote: Grok 3 is “scary smart”.

As of last Friday, the probability of the asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting Earth on December 22, 2032 had been downgraded to 0.36%, after NASA initially reported its highest-ever impact probability for an object of its size. This means there is a 99.64% chance it will not hit Earth. YR4, which was discovered in December 2024, is estimated to be 40-90m (130-300 ft.) wide. It is moving in an eccentric orbit of the Sun at a speed of about 61,000 kph (38,000 mph). Further updates will not be possible until 2028 when YR4 approaches Earth again.

WEIRD NEWS

Parts of Dutch society are campaigning to bring risky playground equipment back, as concerns about too much time spent indoors, helicopter parenting, and childhood diabetes risk grow. Some are advocating playgrounds with potentially dangerous toys, such as a merry-go-round, but others are even asking for places for their children to start fires, build with hammers, and play-fight with sticks. Of course, no one wants kids to be injured, but the policy proposal from one political party claims that without spaces to explore and challenge themselves in, kids risk losing the chance to develop crucial skills. One rep said: “The inspiration, and it really is a huge problem, is that children are hardly moving. All kinds of problems stem from just sitting behind a screen.”
