Scientists say they have finally figured out how polar bear fur repels ice, no matter how cold it is. As you might know, they regularly plunge into freezing waters to hunt seals – but unlike your car windshield on a winter morning, their fur doesn’t turn into a frozen mass. An international research team led by Trinity College Dublin’s School of Chemistry discovered that polar bear fur contains a natural ice-repellant similar to advanced synthetic materials, thanks to a protective oil called sebum. This explains how polar bears stay ice-free while hunting in temperatures that can plummet below -40°.

Gwyneth Paltrow recently sold her 8,000-square-foot mansion in Brentwood’s Mandeville Canyon for $22 million, though it fell far short of her initial asking price. The Wall Street Journal reports she originally listed the home for $29.99 million, later reducing it to $24.9 million. The estate, which avoided damage during the LA wildfires, boasts luxurious features including 6 bedrooms, a large kitchen with a wood-burning oven, as well as a one-bedroom guesthouse. It also includes an office, gym, wine cellar, movie theater, and game room. Paltrow purchased the home in 2012 with then-husband Chris Martin. Despite the $8 million price drop, the sale still leaves her with a substantial return.

Facebook estimates that 5% of its users are fake.
If you see the words “act fast” in an email, beware. In a new PSA, the FBI is flagging some telltale signs that the message in your inbox is a possible scam. One sign, it says, is specific pressure to “act fast.” Those emails should be closed immediately because, they’re likely “a cybernetic Trojan horse”. Microsoft is also warning to “be suspicious of emails and Teams messages that claim you must click, call or open an attachment immediately.” The software company says: “Often, they’ll claim you have to act now to claim a reward or avoid a penalty.” That false sense of urgency “is a common trick used by those attempting phishing attacks and scams.”

A chunk of fossilized vomit dating back to the time of the dinosaurs has been discovered in Denmark. Fossil hunter Peter Bennicke found the…um…stuff at a coastal cliff not far from Copenhagen. The self-declared “fossil geek” took the fragments to be examined at the Museum of East Zealand, which confirmed the vomit could be dated to the end of the Cretaceous period 66 million years ago – when dinosaurs including Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops existed. The spew sample has already been classified by Denmark as an object of “exceptional natural historical value.”
