Show Notes for Wednesday, February 05, 2025

Today we visit with Captain Joe Dion of the new Discovery Channel series, Harpoon Hunters. This show follows the elite fishermen who capture one of the world’s fastest and most valuable fish, the Atlantic Bluefin tuna, using only 10-ft electrified spears. (There may be only 20-30 successful professional Harpoon Hunters in the world.) Local fishing families in Cape Cod, MA, have just four weeks in the summer to catch as many bluefin tuna (which may be worth $10,000 apiece) as they can, but with a limited supply, they’re not only racing the clock, but competing against each other. According to a new study, those popular GLP-1 medications for weight loss and diabetes (such as Ozempic and Wegovy) have the potential to treat or reduce the risk of a number of other afflictions, such as substance abuse disorders, psychosis, infections, some kinds of cancer and dementia. A team at the VA St. Louis Health Care System found that people who took GLP-1 medications had lower risks of 42 different health outcomes and higher risks for 19. Some of the biggest risk reductions were for shock, aspiration pneumonia, liver failure, lung failure, and cardiac arrest. On the other side of the coin, people who took GLP-1 medications were found to be more likely to experience problems in their bones and joints, like arthritis and tendinitis, compared with people taking other medications to manage their blood sugar. In addition, the study’s author warns that people shouldn’t take this medication without first speaking with a medical professional, “because the side effects are real”.

It’s time for the annual Golden Raspberry Awards. The Razzies, which aims to (dis)honor the worst in film over the past year, has announced nominations for its 45th edition. Joker: Folie à Deux leads the field with 7 nominations, while “Madame Web,” “Megalopolis,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan” have 6 each. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are up for worst actress and worst actor, respectively, as well as worst screen combo. https://razzies.com/index.html

Prince Harry has received an 8-figure sum in damages after reaching a surprise settlement in his legal battle against the publisher of UK newspaper The Sun. People reports the amount, likely exceeding $12 million, covers damages in his case against the publisher over accusations of illegal information gathering by journalists and private investigators. In a statement following the Jan. 22 settlement, which came after both sides reached an agreement before the trial in London began, owner NGN said they offer “a full and unequivocal apology” to Harry and confirmed they had agreed to pay him “substantial damages.”

SCOOP OF THE DAY: Brought to you by JaseCaseMedical.com

A survey found that before going on a date, the majority of men listen to classic rock, while the majority of women prefer Top 40.

Remember, in 2020, when the “Shopping cart theory” went viral? The idea was that it could be determined whether or not you are a good person based on if you would return a grocery cart to the bay if nobody was watching. Shoppers around the world shared what they would do in this situation, which was described as the “ultimate litmus test for whether a person is capable of self-governing.” And now, in 2025, there’s a new supermarket-based litmus test, that supposedly will tell you if you’re an upstanding citizen or a “self-important, lazy you-know-what”, as one Redditor put it. It came up after someone posted a picture in the “Aldi Fans Australia” Facebook group of a steak that someone had dumped on top of a piece of furniture in the middle of a store. The poster wrote: “How lazy can you get? There are…only 4 aisles…” Among the many comments from disgusted people, some said they’ve noticed this happening more often lately. And a supermarket employee shared a photo of 4 carts full of items they had found at the end of their shift that had been left around the store. So, are you guilty or no?
