THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

I have a 6-year-old son and am not with his father anymore. The father is engaged to be remarried. My son will still live with me, but we have a good relationship, and he’ll spend time with them. I just discovered that he bought one of those motherhood pendants as an engagement gift for his fiance. It has her photo on one side and my son’s on the other. She’s showing it off on Instagram as if she is the child’s mother. That’s MY son, not hers! The father told me, “Relax. We want to show him that she loves him and sees him as part of her family. We want him to feel like he has two mothers.” Well, that doesn’t work. Yes, the other woman is good with my son, but wearing a motherhood pendant and positioning as a second mother? That is overstepping her bounds, right???

Signed,

Real Momma!!

Tax Refunds... How to spend it? Well, it seems that life happens. According to a poll of 2,000 adults in the US, for 77%, their tax refund must be spent on necessities. Those include rent (52%), groceries and essential items (44%), and credit card debt (37%). But a fortunate 8% said they are planning to spend their refund on luxuries. Like what? 37% of those lucky people said they’d buy new clothing. 28% will spend their windfall on entertainment, and 26% see a new phone in their near future. BTW, the average person said they expect to receive a refund of about $1,700 this year.

A recent story in Bloomberg Businessweek detailed how some breakfast staples, such as eggs (recent price spikes notwithstanding…), butter and even cottage cheese – are back. By that, they mean those items have regained popularity with the public after at one point being out of favor. But do you know what breakfast staple might NEVER come back? Orange juice. Consumption in the US is down by more than half since the 1990s. Why? The experts say there are a number of reasons that orange juice may never again be as popular as it once was – among them:

• Nutrition: More consumers have grown leery of how much sugar they are consuming.

• Prices: The cost of both bottles of OJ and frozen concentrate have spiked in the past year. Meanwhile, bottles have also been victims of ‘shrinkflation’, AND potential tariffs on the stuff as retaliatory measures by Mexico and Canada won’t help.

• Storms and diseases: Hurricanes and a disease called “citrus greening” have taken their tolls on many of Florida’s storied orange groves.

The good news is that brands such as Minute Maid and Tropicana are experimenting with new blends

WEIRD NEWS: Brought to you by WeirdGiftOfTheDay.com

A man who accidentally threw away a computer hard drive wants to buy the landfill where he believes it was transported to. Why? Because underneath layers of year-old garbage, that hard drive contains the key to $800 million in bitcoin. James Howell of Wales, who accidentally disposed of the drive in 2013, wrote last week on X that after years of battling local authorities to retrieve it, he is “considering purchasing a landfill site. Funding secured.” He didn’t say who is providing the funding. A British High Court judge dismissed his latest attempts to force the local council to allow him to search the landfill. Howells accidentally threw out the hard drive when he was clearing out his house, thinking it was a blank drive that contained no data. Since then, the value of the bitcoin Howells says is loaded onto the hard drive has skyrocketed from $9 million to almost $800 million, as prices of cryptocurrency have soared in recent years.
