According to a new study, clogged roads lead to clogged arteries. As reported in the Journal of Urban Economics, traffic jams cause motorists to turn off the freeway and into fast food drive-thrus. In Los Angeles County, surprise gridlock causing a delay of 31 seconds per mile on drivers’ weekday commutes resulted in a 1% jump in visits to fast food restaurants. That means roughly 1.2 million extra visits to drive-thrus annually. One of the study’s authors explained that for many, their commute is when they are “making decisions around dinner.” Unexpected slow-downs were also linked to a “slight decrease” in grocery stores visits, demonstrating how traffic delays often drive people toward quick and easy takeout meals.

Netflix has greenlighted a new version of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic 1930s book series, after the 1970s drama enjoyed a stunning resurgence on Peacock recently. Rebecca Shonnenshine, known for her work on “The Boys”, will serve as showrunner. Little House on the Prairie was first adapted into a TV series in 1974, centering on the adventures of the Ingalls family, who lived on a farm in 1800s Minnesota. The show lasted 9 seasons, concluding on May 10, 1982.

Let’s hope the deep-thinkers at Netflix are listening: A Reddit user recently posted an awesome suggestion for the streaming service: “Netflix could include ratings from Rotten Tomatoes to save us all a web search.” As you may know, the platform used to give viewers the opportunity to rate shows and films, but that was replaced by the current ‘thumbs up’ or ‘down’ system, that enables Netflix to provide viewing suggestions based on your opinion. Most commenters agreed, with one writing that a ‘5-star system’ would be perfect. Another wrote they assumed Netflix ditched its rating system because “their in-house shows were being panned.”
Have you ever had it happen to you that in the says leading up to a big presentation, or an important social function — or during a stressful work week, your skin seems to flare up, or you go all blotchy? Scientists always believed there must be a link between stress and worsening allergy symptoms – and now, Japanese researchers say they have uncovered the cellular chain reaction that explains why stress can mess with your immune system and make your skin allergies more severe. In research published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the scientists describe how when we’re stressed, certain immune cells that normally reduce inflammation basically “forget” how to do their job. That’s what causes your skin problems. They say that these cellular changes can persist for up to a week after the stressful event. That’s also a possibly explanation of why periods of high stress often lead to prolonged allergy symptoms.
