Today we visit with film editor and author Lisa Cheek, about the her book, SIT, CINDERELLA, SIT: A Mostly True Memoir
When Film Editor Lisa Cheek was abruptly fired from doing the work she loved, cutting television commercials. Two days later she got a call at 2:45am – from cinematographer and director Rober Owen who knew and valued her work. That call brought Lisa into the director’s vision of filming the original story of Cinderella, written in China in 768 AD, in China. But Lisa had to say yes, now, and be on location to hit the ground running in just several weeks. Thinking back to when she first saw Cinderella at the age of five, etched into her memory as, “the most magical story”, she couldn’t say no. Reality soon hit, however, when Lisa realized the film would be told entirely in Mandarin – a language she didn’t speak.

This is the month that thousands of people dread – and it’s not because the Christmas credit card bills are coming in. It’s “Dry January”, when many challenge themselves to lay off the booze for the entire month. The Dry January challenge started in 2013, when a charity in the UK decided to get people involved in creating a healthier relationship with alcohol. But Dry January may prove to be not very difficult at all, because many are already drinking less. US stats show that per capita alcohol consumption has dropped to its lowest level since 2002. And it’s younger people who are leading the way: The share of 18-34-year-olds who say they drink at all has fallen by 10% in the last 2 decades. And Dry January is more popular than ever, with web searches for the term in the first week of 2024 doubling, compared to a year earlier. And alcohol sales at 3 major US liquor chains plunged 52% in the first week of January last year. In fact, this month, many bars are now offering special ‘mocktails’ and other promotions, just to get people in the door.

Jamie Lee Curtis is using her platform to urge Los Angeles citizens to ease emergency response efforts as the city grapples with wildfires spreading through the area. The Oscar-winner shared an impassioned Instagram post, imploring her followers to heed warnings from local officials as blazes rage through southern California — particularly the Pacific Palisades neighborhood. Alongside a picture of a home engulfed in flames, she wrote: “My community and possibly my home is on fire…With all the technology there seems to be very little information. PLEASE POST FACTS! IT WILL HELP THOSE WONDERING!” According to reports, the home of Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag burned to the ground on Tuesday, and Ben Affleck, Eugene Levy, James Woods, and Mark Hamill are among the celebs forced to evacuate their mansions as a nearby wildfire rages.
There’s been a change of plans with Brendan Fraser’s next role. The Oscar winner has dropped out of the off-Broadway production of “Grangeville” one month before the show begins. Signature Theatre announced Monday that Paul Sparks, known for his role in “Boardwalk Empire” is replacing him. The Instagram statement said that Fraser “had to step away due to unforeseen circumstances.” No official word yet from Fraser. The show is scheduled to premiere at New York’s off-Broadway Signature Theatre on Feb. 4, and run through March 16.

A survey found that veterinarians are the least-cursed-at business.
It looks like weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic are not just leading to smaller waistlines – they’re also trimming the fat off the profits of some food companies. New research from Cornell University shows that people using GLP-1 and other prescription meds for weight loss tend to spend less on food as a result. The study found that households in which at least one person is utilizing the appetite-supressing drugs spend 6% less on groceries in the first 6 months. And among higher-income families, it was more like 9%. And what groceries in particular did they spend less on? The steepest decline was seen in processed foods like chips and other savory snacks (11%), as well as baked sweets (9%). These households were also seen to spend less at fast-food restaurants and coffee shops. And those on weight-loss drugs were found to spend more on foods that dieticians recommend, such as yogurt and fresh produce.

The Australian government has proposed a ban on children under 16 from using social media — and will hand large fines to companies that don’t comply. The ban is to apply to services including TikTok, X, Instagram and Snapchat. This comes after several incidents of bullying, and complaints from parents about the pressure their children face online.

WORDS AND PHRASES BANNED FOR 2025:
Michigan’s Lake Superior State University has released its 2025 “List of Words Banished From the Queen’s English for Misuse, Overuse & General Uselessness”. Here is this year’s crop — and why they are no longer to be used, effective immediately…
✗ Cringe: While “cringe” once packed a punch, it has overstayed its welcome. Overuse has dulled its impact, and ironically, using it might now cause the very reaction it describes.
✗ Game Changer: This phrase, often used to describe anything remotely innovative, is as tired as a well-worn cliché. To put it bluntly: “Nothing is a game changer if everything is (called) a game changer.”
✗ Era: Taylor Swift might be to blame for the term’s overuse, which has made every fleeting moment feel like it demands a historical marker. Now, it seems there is an ‘era’ for everything!
✗ Dropped: It was once an edgy and cool way to describe the release of a new album, a trend, or a product. But with all kinds of unnecessary things currently being ‘dropped’ rather than introduced, released, or offered for sale, it has become overused, misused, and abused.
✗ IYKYK (If You Know, You Know): This internet slang phrase offers little clarity or substance. If you know, you might agree it is time to let this one go.
✗ Sorry Not Sorry: A tired and lame apology masquerading as bold honesty, Banished Word enthusiasts recommend just saying what you mean, and perhaps showing a little kindness.
✗ Skibidi: While this word, a nonsense term that can mean “cool” or “dumb”, or be used as a filler word, tends to resonate with a younger crowd, for many it is just noise. At this point, nobody even knows for sure WHAT it means, and it’s just annoying.
✗ 100%: Banished for overuse, you’ve also got to wonder: “Since when should a percentage be used to describe your agreement in a conversation?”
✗ Utilize: This is one of those times when a longer word is not necessarily better. Why complicate things when “use” works just fine? After all, experts suggest you “write like you talk”.
✗ Period: Please stop using this word at the end of sentences as a way of punctuating your point. Overuse has turned this into a ‘period’ that needs to end.
