I'M POSTING THIS EARLIER SO YOU CAN CHIME IN TOO!

THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

I’ve got a weird (and kind of morbid) question to ask. I have a very good guy friend whose wife of three years tragically passed away a couple of months ago. She was a sweet woman and lost a short battle with cancer. So here’s the weird part that I need a little guidance on and please don’t be too harsh on me for thinking this. I felt bad for him and invited him for Christmas eve. It went great. We really hit it off and he told me how much he appreciated it. But it was just as friends and I want it to be more. How long before I can ask him out? I know there’s a process of grief, and that’s different for everyone, so I realize you won’t be able to give me an exact answer, but he’s such a great guy, and I am highly interested. Also, I am pretty sure I’m not the only woman in his life who is thinking this. I don’t want to come across as insensitive by asking too soon, and I don’t want to be labeled the “rebound chick.” But I don’t know the proper protocol. What should I do?

Signed,

Maybe In Love

According to a new report, just like the list of household chores that never goes away, the gender gap goes on and on: After all these generations, women still generally take on more domestic tasks than men. Researchers at the University of Alberta studied 250 couples over the course of 25 years found what they’re referring to as a “gendered pattern” of housework in people’s 20s, which continues well into midlife – and if you have kids, the gap only widens. The data shows that women consistently did the majority of the cooking, kitchen cleaning, grocery shopping, housecleaning, laundry, and overall housework. A Statistics Canada report from 2022 found that of those who worked from home, women spent about 40 minutes more per day on unpaid housework than men. And when it comes to child-care duties, even with both parents working, mothers spent an average of about 52 minutes more per day with their kids than dads did. Experts say that although the gap persists, there are signs it is narrowing over time.

The 2025 Critics Choice Awards will now take place on Friday, Feb. 7, the Association has announced. The awards show—set to be hosted Chelsea Handler—was previously postponed from Jan. 12 to Jan 26 amid the ongoing wildfires across Los Angeles. The latest postponement comes as fires from Pacific Palisades to Pasadena continue to burn in Los Angeles County. The show will broadcast live on E! from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.

“Frasier’s” return has hit a major bump. Paramount+ has canceled the Kelsey Grammer-led comedy after 2 seasons. Producer CBS Studios says it remains committed to the series and plans to shop it to other outlets. Those are not expected to include CBS. The network, which is eying a spinoff of “The Neighborhood” among other comedies in development, has no space available. Possibilities include Prime Video and Hulu, which both carry the library of Frasier’s original run.

If you think you look like your dog, you might be absolutely correct, according to science. Stanley Coren, a professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia’s psychology department and author of more than a dozen books about dogs, says he has found evidence to suggest human-dog resemblance is a real thing. He cites a 2004 study that asked participants to match photos of dogs and owners – and they did so successfully for purebred dogs most of the time. The next year, a similar study found participants did better than random chance at correctly matching the owner to their dog. Later, a review of 15 of these studies by German researchers came with 2 theories of why dogs seem to look like their owners: For one, it’s possible that people choose dogs that look like them. Fair enough — people like things they are familiar with. The other possible reason is this: Dogs come to look more like their owners over time. The evidence on that one is mixed.

Add “Steppin” to the ever-growing list of phone apps designed to encourage you to get up off the couch and get moving. This one is a bit different, though. The thing is that Steppin literally blocks all of your social media apps, unless you walk a certain number of steps each day. The user can unlock time on their favorite social media platforms, like TikTok and Instagram, by achieving daily step goals. The app’s co-founder says he came up with the idea while on vacation, and even though he and his companions were traveling in a place with beautiful scenery, they were constantly scrolling social media. While he is aware of other apps that block social media usage, the concept of Steppin is that it is tied to the amount of steps taken on a given day – and the hope that the exercise will provide a boost to users’ physical and mental health.

I’m not sure if this is something that you’ve ever aspired to, but a team at the University of Waterloo is hard at work at it anyway. Someday, thanks to their years of toil and trouble, you might be able to order coffee – with your feet. That’s correct. The focus of their research is on being able to control apps with your feet. Why? One professor at the university, located in Waterloo, Ontario, said he was inspired when he was on a winter walk and wanted to order Starbucks remotely – but he was wearing mitts. The team found that slight variations in how you walk could be enough to tell augmented reality devices what it is that you want to do. You would be able to place your order without taking your phone out – and while leaving your mittens on. It could be that something as simple as a tap of the foot or a slower stride would mimic how you usually select commands with your fingers. So far, tests have shown that these gestures can be used with a number of apps, such as viewing a web page, scrolling through a menu, and adjusting the brightness or volume of a device.
