THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!
Dear John,
My boyfriend and I have been together for five years and started living together six months ago. He is fantastic, and I want to spend the rest of my life with him. We went shopping over Christmas, and I found the absolutely perfect engagement ring for him to give me. It was on sale for 50% off. So you know, I have thought about proposing to him because he’s taking his time about it, but my best friends told me not to go there because it would be “taking away his moment.” But this was perfect, and he’s never going to find a ring as perfect as this. So I bought it without telling him. Now I’m thinking about purchasing another ring for him and proposing to him on Valentine’s Day. I’ll give him both rings, so he can turn around and propose to me and make my dreams come true. That’s not crazy, is it?
Signed,
Ready for Marriage

Here’s a little something to keep in mind the next time you find yourself in a heated argument – and you’re absolutely sure that you’re right: Science has just confirmed that the more confident you feel about your stance, the more likely it is that you don’t know as much as you think you do. Study coordinator Angus Fletcher of Ohio State University’s Project Narrative used the example of when someone is stuck in traffic, complaining of the “idiot” moving too slowly in front of them, woefully unaware that the driver is carefully transporting a wedding cake, or that the “maniac” who just rushed past was taking someone to the hospital. Fletcher said that in general, “people don’t stop to think whether there might be more information that would help them make a more informed decision. If you give people a few pieces of information that seem to line up, most will say ‘that sounds about right’ and go with that.”

Multiple films that people enjoyed at the end of 2024 stayed at the top to start 2025, as “Mufasa” claimed the #1 spot for the year’s first weekend. In its third weekend in theaters, the “Lion King” prequel earned an estimated $24.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $168 million as it crossed $400 million globally. “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” came second with $20.7 million, pushing the franchise over $1 billion for its 3 films. “Nosferatu” came third, followed by November holdovers “Wicked” and “Moana 2”.
The National Society of Film Critics has named “Nickel Boys” its best picture of 2024. RaMell Ross won for best director, and the film received the award for best cinematography. Colman Domingo took home the prize for best actor for his role in “Sing Sing”, while “Hard Truths” star Marianne Jean-Baptiste won best actress. Fellow Hard Truths star Michele Austin won best supporting actress, and Kieran Culkin received the award for best supporting actor for “A Real Pain”.

Fashionistas are fuming about Walmart’s version of the famous Hermès Birkin bag. Budget-conscious buyers have been flocking to Walmart, after the store’s Birkin bag look-alike, nicknamed the “Wirkin” took over the internet. Authentic Birkin bags, which are stitched by hand and are a proud accessory of A-listers, normally start at around $9,000 (if you can get one) at a Hermès boutique. And on the resale market or at auction, they can go for upwards of hundreds of thousands. But as fashion-obsessed TikTokkers have been pointing out, the convincing Walmart knockoff costs less than $100. And viewers are rushing to the chain store to snag one – or several, with hundreds of unboxing videos posted under the #walmartbirkin. And while critics of the seemingly unattainable handbag are celebrating what they feel is the downfall of the “rich people’s” status symbol, luxury lovers aren’t happy. One commented that the buzz about the Walmart version promotes fast fashion and is has “complete disregard” for the craftsmanship and artistry required to hand-make an authentic Birkin. Emergency teams responded to a panic alarm coming from a South African home – only to find that the call had been sent out as a result of some literal monkey business. Security company Mi7 National Group said on social media that its control room received multiple panic alarm signals from a home on Dec. 26, and after several units arrived, “the client informed them that a monkey had gotten into the home and nabbed a remote containing the panic button.” The monkey took off with it, and the company continued to receive panic signals until the primate was out of range of the receiver. Officials wrote: “the client opted not to have our teams chase down the culprit, and let him get away with the loot.”
