THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

You’ll think this is messed up, but I started dating my daughter’s high school history teacher. My daughter didn’t know it at first, then she was embarrassed, but she came around. Well, the relationship didn’t work out, and we broke up. But now, my daughter, who was supposed to graduate in the spring, has a problem. Just before Christmas break, the teacher told me he would have to fail her unless she gets much better in the next semester! Can you believe it? He told me she wasn’t doing good work. My daughter says it’s my fault. I broke up with this guy, and she says he’s retaliating by holding it against her. But that’s not it. He showed me her work, and I saw why she was not passing. Still, it seems like most teachers would try to fix the situation and he’s not helping. So I’m thinking of going to the principal about it when school starts up again. I like the teacher and don’t want to get him in trouble, but my daughter may not graduate. If this guy is holding it against her because of me, it’s unfair. My daughter says I need to get back with him until school is out…and says that will fix everything. What should I do?

Signed,

Mixed Up Momma

Research shows that taking a placebo not only helps people feel better when dealing with an illness – it also helps with a broken heart — simply by tricking one into thinking that they’re on the mend. Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder gave a nasal spray without medicinal properties to test participants who recently experienced an unwanted breakup. They “found a placebo can have quite strong effects on reducing the intensity of social pain.” They concluded their research demonstrates “how expectation can be harnessed to achieve desired aims”, and how “doing anything that you believe will help you feel better will probably help you feel better.”

The term ‘deadline’ comes from the American Civil War. Prisoners would have lines drawn around them in the dirt, and if they crossed this line, then they would be executed by their guards. Both prisoners and guards soon took to calling this line the “dead line.”

Each episode follows a set of small-town parents with an adult child who is successful, but unlucky in love. In true Hallmark style, these adult children live in big cities. Laughter has been proven as a way to lose weight.

Apparently, using dog names to name human babies is a rising trend, says baby name consultant Colleen Slagen. She shared in a TikTok video that one of the most common insults she sees in comments is that a name given to a kid is a dog’s name, not a human’s. But according to Slagen, “Dog names are in”, and giving your child a name inspired by what is commonly though of as a dog name is considered “a compliment now.” To give some examples, a few approaches come to mind: The first is “cutesy nickname” names, for example, Charlie, Daisy, Sophie, Ruby, Sadie and Archie. Next, are the “short and sweet” names, like Leo, Max, Chloe and Luna. And another trend is “true” dog names, like Bear, Banjo and Blue — names which “against your best instincts,” people start to consider for their children. There are also “cool, edgy” names inspired by canines, including Cooper, Maverick and Duke.

University of Houston researcher Melika Shirmohammadi said that despite the fact that online gaming often gets a bad reputation, their research shows that “gaming can actually help people develop valuable workplace skills.” Such as? Skills that can be honed by playing video games include problem-solving, teamwork, leadership, and self-confidence. The team’s study found that gaming, when done in moderation, “can be a way for people to grow both personally and professionally.”

THE LIST: Brought to you by JaseCaseMedical.com

THE WORST TV SHOWS OF 2024:

✗ “The Bear”: The restaurant drama starring Jeremy Allen White may have had 2 good seasons, but season 3 was a slog that laid bare the show’s most glaring flaw: it’s not interested in plot. (Ouch!)

✗ “Beast Games”: YouTuber Mr. Beast’s TV show is the “Fyre Festival” of reality shows. It has seen an endless string of controversies, including contestants alleging they were deprived of food and medicine, and 5 who sued Mr. Beast for “chronic mistreatment” and alleged sexual harassment.

✗ “Landman”: “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan’s latest show leans into all of his worst traits and none of his former show’s charm. While Yellowstone viewers mocked him for casting supermodel Bella Hadid as his girlfriend in that show, Landman goes even harder on those dubious instincts.

✗ “Cruel Intentions”: The 1999 movie was a modern classic, but this tired remake is not only unnecessary — it’s worse in every way.

✗ “Are You Smarter than a Celebrity?”: Mindless game shows that are nothing more than “content” are a dime a dozen. What’s worse about this one is the cynical use of Travis Kelce and his newly-elevated Taylor Swift fame. He is essentially dangled on a stick for the viewer, with the assumption that people will watch just about anything if a famous face is in it.
