A new poll of 2,000 people who plan to host a get together this season found that 65% believe they will still be housecleaning until the moment their guests arrive. And that’s not even the worst part. The most time-consuming task is preparing meals, according to 40% of respondents. That’s followed by shopping for groceries and essentials (16%) and cleaning the kitchen (10%). As for those of us who won’t be hosting, but will be attending a celebration as a guest, survey respondents said the thing they’d most appreciate help with is setting the dinner table (35%), washing dishes (26%), and taking out the trash (22%). And what’s the WORST thing you could do, as a guest? That would be inviting someone else without letting the host know.

In
Soviet labor camps, prisoners would ingest a condom attached to a
length of rubber tubing, fill it up with raw alcohol then smuggle
themselves back into the camp. Once there they would be suspended
upside down by the other prisoners and used as a human keg.

Movie ticket sales took a bit of a hit in 2024. The annual domestic box office is expected to end up at around $8.75 billion, down more than 3% from 2023, according to estimates from Comscore. It’s not as bad as it was in the pandemic years, but it’s also not even close to the pre-pandemic era when the annual box office regularly surpassed $11 billion. The top domestic movie last year was “Inside Out 2”, with a total of $653 million, followed by “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Wicked”. Estimates for 2025 predict a domestic haul of about $9 billion, an increase of about $300 million over 2024.

So . . . how are those resolutions going? I hate to tell you this, but according to a Forbes poll, chances are, they’re destined to fail. Results of the survey found that the average resolution lasts 3.74 months. Just 5% of respondents said their last resolution made it 6 months before it was dashed. And just 1% said they were able to keep up with their resolution for an entire year. Ranker recently asked which New Year’s resolutions are most “unrealistically ambitious”. The top answer? “Get out of debt.”
One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is, of course, to lose weight. And while most of us would be thrilled to drop 5 or 10 pounds (2.3-4.5kg), it turns out that most people have their sights set much higher – to the tune of 29 pounds (13.1kg). That’s according to a poll of 2,000 adults in the US who are trying to lose weight. The survey also found that the average person has tried to lose weight on 3 separate occasions in the past 5 years.

WEIRD NEWS: Brought to you by WeirdGiftOfTheDay.com
How about some syrup in your coffee? New research says it might be time to start pouring maple syrup on a lot more things than just pancakes. A team from Laval University in Quebec (of course!) found that replacing just 2 tablespoons of refined sugar with pure maple syrup could significantly reduce several key risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. Maple Syrup contains over 100 natural compounds, including polyphenols, that are known to prevent disease, in part through their anti-inflammatory effects. In addition, the sweet stuff was found to contain a number of healthy nutrients, and provide 4 major health benefits: better blood sugar control, lower blood pressure, reduced abdominal fat, and improved gut health.

COLD “CURES”:
Natural remedies to help fight off a cold, and recover faster…
☞ Elderberries: The tart, dark purple berries from the Sambucus nigra tree are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Studies show that taking them within the first 48 hours of infection can reduce the length and severity of symptoms.
☞ Chicken soup: By now, you’ve probably heard that grandma was right. It has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties, and the steam helps to loosen nasal mucus. (How appetizing!) Plus, it’s packed with nutrients.
☞ Salt water gargle: Gargling with salt water can definitely help with a sore throat. Salt water can kill bacteria, loosen mucus and soothe the pain and swelling that come with a sore throat.
☞ Honey: It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral properties. Studies show its thick texture coats the throat, calming irritation and soothing the urge to cough – and it helps improve sleep for children.
☞ Hydration: Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to support your body when you’re battling a cold. Fluids help thin out mucus, making it easier to clear congestion and breathe comfortably.
☞ Sleep: It is one of the best — and most overlooked tools for staying healthy. Getting less than 6 hours of sleep can weaken your immune system and increase your risk of catching a cold. Once you’re sick, sleep becomes even more important, to activate your immune cells and fight infection.
