A University of Iowa study says that being a so-called “couch potato” is linked to increased risk of 19 different chronic conditions. Their analysis of over 40,000 patient records found that inactivity increases the likelihood of developing chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease and diabetes — and obesity, which you may have guessed. Regular physical activity, even light exercises like walking, were found to significantly improve overall health, and reduce the risk of disease. The researchers suggest incorporating movement throughout the day, standing more, and breaking up periods of sitting as key strategies for staying healthy for those who have a less-active lifestyle.

In
the Vietnam War, American soldiers believed the playing card The Ace
of Spades to be a symbol of superstition and fear amongst the Viet
Cong soldiers. So much so that Charlie Company of the army’s 2nd
battalion ordered crates of this single card in bulk so they could
scatter it in Viet Cong terrain and litter the bodies of dead Viet
Cong soldiers with it. The Ace of Spades was not feared by the Viet
Cong.

“Wicked” has topped nominations to the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards, landing a leading 5 nods, including best ensemble, and individual nominations for Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey. The best male lead nominees were largely as expected: Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”), Daniel Craig (“Queer”), Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”), Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) and Timothee Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”). Demi Moore is among the nominees for best female actor in a leading role for “The Substance”, joined by Erivo, “Emilia Pérez” breakout Karla Sofía Gascón, Mikey Madison of “Anora” and Pamela Anderson for “The Last Showgirl.” Wicked saw its Oscar chances rise with the SAG news, which is one of the most predictive Academy Awards bellwethers. The other nominees for best ensemble are: “Anora,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “A Complete Unknown.” SAGs will be handed out on Feb. 23.
The results are in, and while Netflix‘s premiere of “Monday Night Raw” was up over the spectacle’s average audience on USA Network, it’s probably too soon to call it a heavyweight champ. Monday’s episode averaged 2.6M households live + same-day in the U.S., according to data from VideoAmp. That’s up from Raw’s 2024 average of 1.2M households per episode, and higher than any other Raw broadcast in the last 5 years. However, it should be noted that USA Network reports viewership via Nielsen, so it’s not possible to make a direct comparison between the 2, due to different measurement methods. Within 24 hours of its inaugural Netflix broadcast, Raw was up to 4.9M viewers globally.

It turns out that pro athletes like video games just as much as the rest of us – or maybe more. One addiction expert told CNN of an NFL player missing out on a deal worth $14 million a year — due to a video game habit that caused him to miss practice, miss sleep, and fail to show up to important business meetings. One pro snooker player believes athletes are especially vulnerable to video game addiction because they tend to have an obsessive nature, where “Everything I do, I do 100%.” Oh, and by the way, in addition to all of his NBA records, LeBron James is ranked one of the top 100 players in the world at the video game “Madden NFL 25”.

One-third of employees are “afraid” to use the washroom where they work, according to a new poll. UK-based bathroom appliance company QS supplies backed the study, which involved surveying more than 1.000 employees on their workplace loo habits, with the idea of calculating the impact of bathroom breaks on company productivity. Now, I hate to be TOO graphic, but, hey, who can’t relate to this.? They found that one in 12 employees has never done a #2 at work. And yes, 36% of us are “scared” to use the work facilities. Why? A lack of privacy was the greatest concern (59%), followed by, yes, embarrassment about the smell (57%) and noise concerns (47%). It was estimated that for companies, $2,833 goes down the toilet per in-office employee each year, due to time spent in the bathroom while on the clock.

GOOD BAD HABITS:
If you made a New Year’s resolution, chances are that it has to do with ditching a bad habit. But not all ‘bad habits’ are actually bad. A Reddit user posted the question: “What counts as a bad habit, but it’s actually good?” Of the more than 1,000 responses, these are the best…
⇒ “Gaming. Studies have shown it improves problem-solving, critical thinking, multi-tasking, decision making, hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, memory, and concentration.”
⇒ “Shaking or vibrating your leg when you have to be sitting for a long time gets the blood moving. It’s better than being completely stationary for hours.”
⇒ “Crying actually helps ease pain, physically and emotionally.”
⇒ “Talking to yourself. Although it can be taken as a sign of loneliness, it can also help you concentrate and organize ideas.”
⇒ “Being lazy from time to time. Sleeping in. Just doing nothing…Enjoy life, nature, friends, alone time, watch silly videos, play games.”
⇒ “Taking a nap during lunch breaks. Some people look down on it, but I get a lot of energy from it.”
⇒ “Staying up late. Some people have different circadian rhythms, and it makes evolutionary sense that in order for a population to thrive, you couldn’t all be asleep at once.”
⇒ “Being less than 100% productive at work. Pacing yourself is important for mental and physical health.”
⇒ “Procrastination. Diamonds are made under pressure.”
⇒ “Swearing. It turns out that letting a few choice words fly is a great way to reduce stress and even dull pain. So, really, you’re not cursing — you’re just practicing verbal therapy!”
