Amateur and professional “pet detectives” in are booked solid in Europe these days, due to a sharp rise in lost and stolen pets. According to one report, dog thefts rose 6% from 2022 to 2023 alone. English and French bulldogs, which are regularly sold for about £3,000 (US $3,725), are among the most frequently targeted breeds. And while pet theft is booming, so is the pet recovery industry. Some owners recruit the services of volunteers, while others will pay hundreds of pounds for professionals to hunt for their lost or stolen pets. Some pet detectives use an arsenal of the latest tech, including thermal imaging drones and cellular outdoor cameras.

In
2002, Brazilian mechanic Alfredo Moser invented a new type of lamp
that uses absolutely no electricity whatsoever! The Moser-lamp is
created using a plastic bottle filled with water and the smallest bit
of bleach (to stop the bottle from turning green with algae) and
works through the refraction of natural light – kicking out roughly
40 – 60 watts per lamp! They are becoming popular in many countries
where electricity is an expensive commodity and have been fitted in
over 140,000 homes in the Philippines. Despite the success of his
invention, Alfredo Moser has not become rich from it but has instead
a great sense of pride in his altruism.

I can’t talk officially…I will say…She really found her niche here, and I think it really worked out beautifully on this show. And I would love to see it continue.”

Micro-retirement: It’s being called the latest career trend – and I have to admit, I kinda like the idea. According to reports, a growing number of younger people in the workforce are opting for the adult equivalent of taking a “gap year”. That’s right – in an effort at fighting corporate burnout, some people are opting to temporarily leave their job – for months – or even years at a time. The story is that these Gen Z and millennial workers are carving a chunk of time from their careers to travel, focus on their passions, or to pick up a different job while they are still young, rather than waiting until they are in their 60s – or later.
A former corporate chef at McDonald’s says that the fast-food chain’s newest straws make beverages taste different. In a TikTok, Mike Haracz explains that McDonald’s switched out their iconic striped straw for something that is “either a little more sustainable and/or cheaper.” He says the new version is “more flimsy”, especially when drinking a milkshake. Even worse to Haracz, “when you try these beverages through this new straw, it is not the same.” He claims there are “a variety of reasons why you perceive beverages in a certain way”, including “the volume, by the diameter of the straw, the tactile feel of it. But because it’s changed, it’s not hitting just right.” McDonald’s sort-of agrees, saying on its website that previous straws were “slightly wider than a typical straw, so all that Coke taste can hit your taste buds.”

There’s chance you were “born to drink”. And by that, I mean scientists have uncovered a link between the length of our fingers and our drinking habits. The research, published in the American Journal of Human Biology, suggests that the length ratio between your index and ring fingers could predict how much alcohol you’re likely to consume. They found that those whose ring finger is longer in comparison to their index finger are more likely to consume alcohol – and display higher risks for problematic drinking behaviors. This relationship was particularly strong in men.
