It won’t come as a surprise to you when I say this, but the holidays aren’t cheap. And a new survey shows just how much of a financial hole some people will be digging for themselves between now and the 25th. The poll of 2,000 Americans who celebrate a winter holiday found that the average adult will spend over $2,000 this holiday season. How does that 2 grand break down? The #1 seasonal spend is on transportation, with those planning to travel spending an average of $846. Hosting the holiday gathering ranks as the second most-expensive item. Those who are “putting on” the celebration said they’ll spend about $658 getting their home ready. Other spendy items include holiday food and refreshments ($155), throwing parties ($123), and clothing ($107). When it comes to gifts, the plan is to spend an average of $559 on loved ones this year, with the most money being spent on kids ($117) and partners ($92). And if you’re wondering how these people are able to spend so much on a holiday, many can’t. 20% said they won’t financially recover from the holiday season until May 2025 or later. And 28% have – or plan to – open a new line of credit to finance their seasonal revelry.

In Bordeaux, France, in 1940, Portuguese diplomat Aristides de Sousa Mendes issued an estimated 30,000 Portuguese travel visas in order to Jewish families fleeing persecution from the Nazis. Once his superiors had learned of his actions, he was ordered back to Portugal, dismissed from office, and denied his pension benefits. Sousa Mendes went on to die in 1954, impoverished and unsung.

Thanks to Martin Lawrence, father of 10 Eddie Murphy has one less wedding to pay for. It seems Lawrence has to pick up the tab for the nuptials of his daughter Jasmin Lawrence and Murphy’s son Eric Murphy, the “Bad Boys” movies star revealed in an interview. Quote: “Well, Eddie said I gotta pay for it…’cause he paid for his last daughter’s wedding — like the last 6 weddings — but he said it’s my turn now.” Lawrence, the father of 3 daughters, added that he doesn’t mind the traditional approach of the bride’s family paying. The 2 have known each other for decades. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3pvz344w
Spoiler alert! Jamie Foxx has finally revealed that his mystery hospitalization last year was due to a “brain bleed that … led to a stroke.” He tearfully revealed his diagnosis on his Tuesday Netflix special, “Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…” The 56-year-old comedian wiped his eyes while telling the emotional story to the audience, saying, “Please, Lord, let me get through this.” He said that after suffering a “bad headache”, his sister took him to hospital, where he said the “angel” staff “saved [his] life” and “put [him] back together again.” He explained that a doctor told his sister: “If I don’t go in his head right now, we’re going to lose him.’” When Foxx came to 20 days later, he was in a wheelchair.

If you’re looking to find Santa Claus, you’d be on the right track if you headed to Finland. That country has a magical tradition that shares the joy of the season with people from all over the world – a post office where people can send their Christmas wish list – and they are able to visit with jolly old St. Nick every day of the year. It is located at the tourist destination Santa Claus Village near the city of Rovaniemi, and is staffed by a crew of full-time “elves”. The happy crew spend their days sorting through the roughly half-million letters sent to the nearly-North Pole address each year – and respond to as many as they are able. The Santa Claus Main Post Office – first opened in 1991 – is considered Santa’s official address – at least by Finns, and many visitors to the attraction are actually surprised that it is an actual working post office. While many of the letters received there are wish-lists from children, others are from adults, who have been writing every year since they were kids, and feel the need to keep in touch with Santa, and let him know how their year has been. Many young adults also write to Santa, often asking for relationship advice. LINK: https://santaclausvillage.info/

Officials in Bend, Oregon are asking people to stop attaching googly eyes to the city’s sculptures, despite support for the whimsical practice from some locals. The city said on Instagram that the oversized plastic eyes attached to 8 public art installations by unknown pranksters is an expense to the city. The post reads: “While the googly eyes placed on the various art pieces around town might give you a chuckle, it costs money to remove them with care to not damage the art. While we don’t condone the wreaths, leis and Santa hats, let’s stay away from adhesives, graffiti and all things that can damage the art.” A city spokesperson said the adhesives that keep the eyes in place can damage the coating of the metal, and the municipality has already spent over $1,500 removing googly eyes from sculptures. SPENDING LESS ON GIFTS:
Money is tight for many, and while cutting back on holiday spending is the last thing you want to do, it might be a necessity. Here are some ways to celebrate Christmas without breaking the bank…
☆ Send e-cards instead of print cards, or make homemade cards with materials you already have.
☆ Visit thrift and discount stores for low prices on clothes, DVDs, electronics, kitchen appliances, cookware, unique mugs, furniture, toys and books.
☆ Dollar stores have many of those same items, plus candles and makeup. With those, you can create small, hobby-related gift baskets.
☆ Give gifts of service, like an offer to shovel snow, run their errands or shop online for them.
☆ Try your hand at one of the hundreds of homemade gift ideas available online, including candles, dry soup or hot cocoa mixes in jars or sugar scrubs.
☆ Host a Secret Santa gift exchange. This way, each person focuses on just one person, instead of everyone.
☆ If you have children, try the ‘4 gift rule’. Tell them they can have just 4 presents: something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read.
☆ Go retro by crafting a book of homemade coupons redeemable for favors or experiences the receivers care about.
