Tis definitely the season for breaking out the good silverware and dishes. According to a new survey of adults who celebrate the winter holidays, 42% plan to do some hosting this season – including 19% who have never hosted before. And that brings to mind the question of exactly what it takes to be a “Good” host. According to the survey, conducted by Talker Research in the US, 7 in 10 believe it is important to keep things “informal” by inviting guests to wear whatever they want. A similar number of people believe it’s important to have the “perfect” food menu for guests, and 60% said they prepare multiple versions of meals to accommodate guests with different dietary needs. And by the way, if you’re nervous about having friends and family to your place this holiday season, keep this in mind: While one-fifth of people said they have “mastered the art” of hosting, another 47% said they know what they’re doing, but improvise “when they need to.”

France has conducted 210 nuclear weapon tests, more than the United Kingdom, China, India, and North Korea combined! This is scarcely a fifth of the amount conducted by the United States, however, which has conducted roughly 1,054 tests.

Daniel Craig found no solace on the set of his second James Bond movie. He recalled the “difficult” time he had making 2008’s “Quantum of Solace” on the latest episode of the “Awards Chatter” podcast. Describing how the Writers Guild of America strike interrupted production of the movie, Craig said it was a “F-ing nightmare.” According to the former 007, “(Director) Paul Haggis…went off and joined the picket line and we didn’t have writers. So, we didn’t have a script.” He feels that as a result, production should never have begun then, “but we did. I ended up writing a lot of that film, which I probably shouldn’t say. I do not want the credit. It’s fine.”

Saturday Night Live” is turning back the clock for the holidays. Former cast members Chris Rock and Martin Short will return to Studio 8H to host a pair of SNL episodes later this month. Rock will host the Dec. 14 episode with musical guest Gracie Abrams, and Short will host on Dec. 21 with musical guest Hozier.

A study says that radiation from Wi-Fi is hurting trees.

If your “California King”-sized bed just isn’t big enough for you, don’t lose any sleep over it. The “Alaska” might be just the thing you need. Available now, Alaskan-king mattresses (also known as “Alberta King”), which measure an enormous 9-by-9 feet (2.75 X 2.75m), are said to be becoming increasingly popular with pro athletes (especially NBA players?) To properly understand how much floor space you’d need to fit one of these monstrosities in your bedroom, imagine 2 full-size beds jammed together, then add another 28 inches of length. The Alaskan-king is said to be large enough to comfortably accommodate (a-hem!) 4 adults, although mega-mattress companies advertise them for co-sleeping with children and pets. People lying down on Alaskans are said to appear comically tiny. And because they are usually custom-made and sell for upwards of US $5,000, they are definitely a niche product, mainly to higher-income buyers. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/5cbfbuj3

Cats are often tagged with the labels “indifferent” or “aloof”, as though they couldn’t care less if humans were around or not. But are they really as independent and uncaring about companionship as their reputation suggests? Not a chance, according to a study published in the journal Behavioural Processes. In 2017, researchers at Oregon State University conducted a series of tests known as “preference assessments” on 50 random house cats. They placed the kitties in isolation for several hours, and then exposed them to 4 types of stimuli: human, food, toys, and scents. It was determined that the felines displayed a clear preference for human interaction – even over being fed. Food came in second, with toys and scents much further behind. And interestingly, the results held true among shelter cats, too.

WEIRD NEWS: Brought to you by WeirdGiftOfTheDay.com

Scientists say they have solved the age-old question: ‘Which came first – the chicken or the egg?’ A team in Switzerland says that long before chickens clucked or embryos developed, a microscopic marine creature was involved in the intricate act of cellular division. Researchers at the University of Geneva discovered something extraordinary in Chromosphaera perkinsii, a single-celled organism. It turns out that the genetic machinery for creating eggs — the fundamental starting point of complex life — existed in this organism over a billion years before animals emerged. That means that scientifically speaking, the egg came long before the chicken – or any other animal.

FOOD TRENDS FROM THE LAST 10 YEARS THAT MIGHT BE OFFICIALLY “DEAD”:

According to an article in “Cheapism”, these food trends from the last decade are “dead” – or dying. See if you agree…

Cake Pops: These were everywhere for a while, but now have found their (much smaller) audience: kids. (How do we know? The pleas from the backseat while at the Starbucks drive-thru!)

Sriracha: It is still available at many restaurants, but has certainly faded since the frenzy of a few years ago. (Good! I never did figure out how to spell it!)

Gluten-Free Everything: There was a time when it seemed that everything was labelled gluten-free (even if it had never had gluten to begin with). But finally, people realized that gluten-free is a big deal for those with celiac disease and serious gluten intolerance, but not most others. (I always ordered gluten on the side, anyway…)

Frozen Yogurt Shops: In many areas, they seem to have packed up and left, but lots of fro-yo lovers still miss them. (Not me! I saw waaay to many people sticking their fingers in the dispensers and licking them!)

Bacon Everything: While fast food places still slap bacon on everything, the demand isn’t what it once was – especially during the heights of the Keto diet. (You have to admit – it was a great substitute for a bun!)

Mason Jars: The low-key farmhouse aesthetic might look good, but they’re a weird shape to drink – and the lids are tough to properly clean. (I never wanted to look like a hipster so much that I felt the need to go out and buy those things!)

Sushi burritos: Thanks to social media, they were big in the 2010s – but they’re hard to find now. (Gotta say, though, clickbait or not, a sushi burrito doesn’t sound bad right now!)

Cupcakes: Remember when cupcake stores started a huge trend? But like many desserts, they aren’t as hot as they once were. (Hey, if you’ve never seen a cupcake wedding cake, consider yourself lucky!)

Pulled pork: For a while it was everywhere — pulled pork fries, on your burger, on nachos, on mac and cheese, even on eggs benny.
