THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John

So my boyfriend invited me to Christmas with his family. We have gotten into it in the past about him using the term “friend” when I’m his girlfriend, he says he uses the term interchangeably and his family knows what he means… but says he will refer to me as that going forward. But then he says he won’t use the term “girlfriend” when he introduces me to his parents he uses “friend” because his parents have very traditional values, very old school. He says that his mom will pull him to the side and clarify if we are “courting” and he will say yes. In which I’m like; I thought they already would know? He says they will ask us both alot of questions so maybe it’s not a good time to meet yet, he has referred to me as girlfriend to friends however. He says he hasn’t been right with his walk with God so he may not be ready for their questions. I think he cares too much about what they think and that he is afraid to differ from them or do things his way and he says that’s me manipulating and I don’t have the whole story so we need to talk. So my question is, do older, religious people not use the term “girlfriend” ? Or is he just plain wrong? We see each other almost everyday, we're very serious. We've talked about marriage and he has told me he loves me. What do I do in this situation?

Confused “friend”

If you get stressed out at this time of year with the task of finding the right gift for everyone on your list – and then having to make sure it is nicely wrapped and delivered on time, take heart: New research says that gift-givers overestimate the negative consequences of sending a late gift. Why? In a series of studies that will soon be published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology, it was concluded that when people give presents, they pay more attention to “norms” of gifting than the recipients do. For example, earlier research has found that people tend to be reluctant to give “used” things as presents because there’s a norm that gifts should be new. But in reality, many people are good with receiving used things. The new research found that this concept also applies to beliefs about the importance of timing. Many people worry that a late gift signals that they don’t care about the recipient – and that their relationship will be affected as a result. But in reality, these fears are largely unfounded – and gift recipients are much less worried about when the gift arrives.

Chock Chapple already has the key to Joan Vassos’ heart. Now, the “Golder Bachelorette” stars just need an apartment in New York City. And according to Vassos, they may have found one. She told E! News: “We have a realtor in New York, and she sent us a video of her going through the apartment and it looks great. So, we’re hoping it’s done.” Like any couple, they each had different items on their ‘new home’ wish lists. Chapple wanted a smoking patio where he could enjoy a cigar with friends, and Vassos was looking for a spacious closet. She said that she wants him to have his patio, “But if we find a great place that doesn’t have one, the walk-in closet wins.”

The holiday shopping season is definitely underway, and with the average shopper (in the US) planning to spend more than $1,000 on gifts alone this year, many must be concerned about overspending. Today, consumers have a ton of option when it comes to how to pay for your seasonal expenditures: Do you swipe your credit card and pick up “free” miles? Do you use buy-now-pay-later and spread the payments out over time? Do you use a debit card to avoid going into debt? According to an expert, if you’re worried about spending too much, you should go old-school, and pay with cash. Business school professor Jay L. Zagorsky of Boston University points out that committing to using paper money gives you an automatic method of budgeting. When you’re out of cash, you’re done shopping. In addition, you’re likely to spend less when paying with cash, thanks to the psychological “pain of paying”, which isn’t as apparent when using a credit card. Thirdly, in the long run, paying cash for things is cheaper because you don’t have to pay interest on your purchases. One caveat: Prof. Zagorsky doesn’t recommend putting all of your money into your wallet at once. Instead, bring just a portion of your budgeted cash when going shopping. If you need to bring it all — split the money up and keep some separate.

Some parents are seeing red over a Santa dressed in green. As part of a “holiday partnership” with the “Wicked” movie, “Santaland” at New York’s flagship Bloomingdale’s store is looking more Emerald City than the North Pole. In addition to pink Christmas trees and wand lollipops instead of candy canes, jolly old St. Nick wears a green – instead of his traditional red – suit, with elaborate gold details. A disillusioned mom wrote in a local Facebook group: “Bloomingdale’s is only offering green Santa. We left a bit disappointed without a photo.” Another mother told local media: “There’s no reason to have a green Santa except to promote a movie in an already overly commercialized holiday. Green Santa is stupid … Hard pass.” Kids are also struggling with the change. Over the weekend at “Wicked” Santaland, an emerald elf admitted that some babies take one look at Santa and start crying, explaining: “I think it’s because he’s green.”

SPENDING LESS ON GIFTS:

Money is tight for many, and while cutting back on holiday spending is the last thing you want to do, it might be a necessity. Here are some ways to celebrate Christmas without breaking the bank…

☆ Send e-cards instead of print cards, or make homemade cards with materials you already have.

☆ Visit thrift and discount stores for low prices on clothes, DVDs, electronics, kitchen appliances, cookware, unique mugs, furniture, toys and books.

☆ Dollar stores have many of those same items, plus candles and makeup. With those, you can create small, hobby-related gift baskets.

☆ Give gifts of service, like an offer to shovel snow, run their errands or shop online for them.

☆ Try your hand at one of the hundreds of homemade gift ideas available online, including candles, dry soup or hot cocoa mixes in jars or sugar scrubs.

☆ Host a Secret Santa gift exchange. This way, each person focuses on just one person, instead of everyone.

☆ If you have children, try the ‘4 gift rule’. Tell them they can have just 4 presents: something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read.

☆ Go retro by crafting a book of homemade coupons redeemable for favors or experiences the receivers care about.
