THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John

I keep getting these automatic messages from my son's school saying his lunch account is low. I'm notified when it falls below $15. Here's the thing. I faithfully pay my child support on time, should I do anything? Nothing has changed for me. I still get no contact, no messages, no phone calls, no visitation allowed, but I continue to pay on time. Why would his school lunch account be on empty most of the time? I'm confused, making sure he has food would be the right thing to do, right Mom? But so would more communication. I sure miss them! Not sure what I expect for a reply, but I wanted to send a message to see if you have any ideas!

A new poll found that 43% of people are increasing their charitable activities at the year winds down. And while it’s great that many of us are thinking about what we can do or give to others, it seems that younger people are leading the charge. The survey of 2,000 Americans found that 59% of Gen Z and millennials are actively increasing charitable activities before 2024 draws to a close. That’s significantly higher than their older counterparts, with only 37% of Gen X and baby boomers planning to give more in the final weeks of the year.

Timothée Chalamet went viral for crashing his own lookalike contest in New York City, but he showed even more support for the competition behind the scenes. Halfway through the gathering on Oct. 27, NYPD showed up and ousted the thousands of attendees from Washington Square Park. Event organizer Anthony Po was issued a $500 fine for hosting a public event without a permit. But the 23-year-old told People mag that after his social media post about the fine went viral, he heard from Chalamet’s team, which offered to pay the ticket. Though appreciative, Po says he declined Chalamet’s kind offer.

A survey says that 30% of people haven’t seen a single one of their Facebook friends in the past 2 months.

If you’ve ever felt the need to turn your smartphone into a playable flute, violin, or any of a number of other musical instruments, I’ve got just the thing for you. The “Zefiro” is a clever little MIDI controller that plugs into the charge port of your smartphone. Developed by Italian startup ARTNoise, the colorful mouthpiece (which kinda looks like a vape) is equipped with lip sensors and an air pressure sensor, and sends breath power data directly to its app, which is then used to adjust the volume, length, and harmonics of the sound. Keys, or ‘air holes,’ are displayed on the screen of the smartphone, so you can effectively play the instrument with your fingers, as you blow into the mouthpiece. It can be used not only to create sounds and music that sound like they were played by a flute, trumpet, recorder, violin, or synthesized instrument, but a number of other “fantasy sounds” can be selected as well. The Zefiro smart mouthpiece is expected to become available early next year, for around $44. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/57pjnruv

Whether you’re ready for it or not, Kraft Heinz has launched an “everything bagel” flavored version of their bestselling Mac & Cheese. The new product was created in response to fan demand, after the forthcoming flavor won the company’s “Fan Favorites” competition last year. The new creation is seasoned with dehydrated garlic and onion, and flecked with poppy seeds. Early reviews of Kraft Everything Bagel Mac & Cheese have been positive, with one taster at Mashed writing: “This might be the most flavorful box of Kraft Mac and Cheese I have ever had in the best way possible.” But even though it is named “everything”, you won’t find it “everywhere”. The limited run will be available online order only.

Spain: A town named Ponga, in the mountainous northern region, offers up $3,200 to those who’ll move there – plus the same amount for each young child.

Italy: The region of Calabria is offering $30,000 to anyone willing to live in certain small villages, as long as they start a business or fill an essential job. Other places are paying new residents that much to buy a house, and still others are offering “fixer-uppers” for as little as $1.

Japan: Despite overcrowded cities, Japan has many towns that are suffering from dramatic population loss. The Regional Revitalization Program gives grants of up to $31,000 to those willing to move to one of those towns.
