Smartphone addicts have shorter attention span, struggle at work, struggle to hold their relationships together – and are more prone to boredom. Researchers at The State University of New York at Binghamton also found that females especially are at risk of falling under the enchantment of a smartphone’s spell. Their study of 182 college students found that those who were categorized as smartphone “addicts” based on their use, were also found to show symptoms of possible depression, social isolation, social anxiety, shyness, impulsivity, and low self-esteem. The research team said that people who turn to their smartphones as a means of “escape” from personal problems should seek help”, to prevent it from becoming worse.

Chris Evans is planning an MCU homecoming. The actor, best known to Marvel fans as ‘Steve “Captain America” Rogers’, is apparently returning for the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday”, according to The Wrap. It is currently unknown if Evans will reprise his role as Rogers, his earlier role as ‘Johnny Storm’, also known as the ‘Human Torch’, or in a brand new role. No official word from Evans or Marvel, yet. Evans first appeared as Captain America in 2011, and since, he has starred in 5 additional Marvel films, and made cameos in 4 others.
Meet the Parents – again? Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Teri Polo and Blythe Danner are in early talks to return for a new film in the “Meet the Parents” franchise. Deadline reports that plot details are being kept inside the circle of trust. John Hamburg — who co-wrote all 3 prior films, and produced the most recent, “Little Fockers”, is set to write the screenplay. No word yet on who’s directing. Meet the Parents centers on the hilariously awkward and tension-filled dynamics between Stiller’s male nurse ‘Greg Focker’, and his intimidating, ex-CIA father-in-law, De Niro’s ‘Jack Byrnes’.
SCOOP OF THE DAY: Brought to you by JaseCaseMedical.com
A survey found that women spend over 13 hours looking for the perfect gift for their mate — while men spend only 4 hours.
If you’re taking a break these days from your workout routine to deal with the busyness of the season, with the intention of getting back at it in January, you might be wondering how much muscle you’ll lose by shutting things down for a few weeks. Well, good news: New research shows that taking a break from resistance training doesn’t significantly affect your overall strength, in the long run. But you still have to get back to the gym next month. Researchers from the Finnish University of Jyväskylä found that muscles quickly recover their size and strength once you return to your routine. In their study of male and female regular exercisers between the ages of 18 and 40, it was determined that it usually takes about half the length of the break to get back to your previous fitness level. The team surmised that recovery happens so quickly because among those who regularly lift weights, those muscles already have increased blood flow, helping them when you return to your routine. Also, the necessary neural pathways are there, thanks to ‘muscle memory’, making “it easier to rebuild strength and muscle after a break.”

Operators of a cemetery in the UK are being blasted by mortified locals after offering paid “VIP” passes to relatives of those buried there. The Garden of Remembrance, in Stoke-on-Trent, says those who don’t purchase a pass will only be able to enter the cemetery during office hours. A notice outside the cemetery advises: “From January 2025 this site will be protected by electric gates. The gates at the front of the site will open and close automatically at set times.” It goes on to say that entrance will be only via a VIP pass, which will make “the site secure for our staff, families and visitors.” Cemetery VIP passes are selling for £10 (US $12) for access to the rose garden – and £5 ($6) to visit a grave. It’s unclear whether it’s a one-off fee, or whether pass holders will be charged that amount each time they enter. The cemetery owner told a newspaper that VIP passholders will now “be safe from undesirables breaking in.”

UNIQUE CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD:
☆ German Christmas Markets – Some cities host impressive ‘Christkindlmarkts’, where people can shop hand-made souvenirs and seasonal-themed treats, like lebkuchen and pfeffernüsse. Some of these outdoor markets and villages date back 500 years.
☆ British Polar Bear Plunge: Hundreds of people in Brighton, England schedule a Christmas Day dip every year – wearing just a swimsuit and a Santa hat. It is also practiced in London, Dublin, and many other cold places around the world.
☆ Japanese KFC Feast: While Christmas is not a huge celebration in Japan, a fairly new tradition has emerged in which families enjoy a feast of Kentucky Fried Chicken on Christmas Day.
☆ Norwegian Hiding of the Brooms: Dating back centuries, the act of hiding all the brooms in the house is said to deprive the witches and evil spirits of finding something to ride on.
☆ Venezuelan Roller Skate Tour: Before some people in Caracas head home to enjoy their Christmas feast of tamales, hundreds head to church on roller skates. Roads are closed to cars so people can safely partake in this unique annual tradition.
☆ Czech Shoe-Throw for Love: Young unmarried women are said to predict their romantic futures by standing with their backs to their house and tossing a shoe over their shoulder. If the toe points toward the door, wedding bells might be ringing soon, but if it points away, they’ll need to wait another year for true love. Family and friends gather to watch this playful tradition.
☆ Filipino Building of Giant Lanterns: 11 villages in San Fernando create giant lanterns in an annual competition known as The Giant Lantern Festival. People from all over the country gather to see the elaborate collection of lanterns, some of which can reach 20 feet high.
☆ Eat Fried Caterpillars in South Africa: The Pine Tree Emperor Moth — also known as the Christmas caterpillar — is covered in different colors and is said to give a little extra luck in the New Year to all those who eat it. It is considered a delicacy by those who partake.
☆ View the Yule Goat in Sweden: People construct a giant straw goat, which is over 42 feet high, 23 feet wide, and weighs over 3 tons. A live stream of the event is available until the New Year.
☆ Austrian Krampus Parade: Here, while St. Nicholas rewards nice boys and girls with presents, his evil accomplice, Krampus, is said to capture the naughty children and take them away in a sack. The half-man, half-goat costume is designed to frighten kids during the parade, which has grown in popularity across Europe.
