THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER

Dear John

I'm concerned that my daughter may be a hoarder. I was at her home to pick her up. She was not going to let me inside, but I needed to use the bathroom, so she reluctantly let me in. I was shocked. She kept telling me it was just a mess because she was organizing, but there was a literal path to get from room to room. She says she is a collector not a hoarder. She does collect stuffed animals... and she's an artist so she has “art supplies” all over, plus she has quite a collection of shoes. I think this is more of a hoarder situation than anything else. What do I do to help her get this cleaned up?

A new poll found that going on vacation is a job in itself. The survey of 2,000 Americans found these hidden gems about getting ready to get away from it all:

The average person has at least 6 home-related tasks on their to-do list to get ready for vacation.

Top items on the list include: last-minute shopping (70%), cleaning the house (54%), making sure friends and family have a key to the house (50%), unplugging appliances (38%), and setting lights on a timer (28%).

The poll also revealed that vacationers will do 2 “last looks” around the house, on average, to make sure nothing has been forgotten and everything is in order. Despite that, nearly 22% end up turning the car around and going back home because they forgot something — or need to do another “last look.” 40% of the time, that is so they can re-check that they locked the front door. Good plan, too: 8% of respondents said they have returned home after vacation to find that the door was unlocked.

For optimum health, you should eat dinner between 5:00 and 7:00pm. Experts say that eating your evening meal within that 2-hour window can boost weight loss, improve sleep, and aid digestion. Known as the “early bird approach,” timing your last meal of the day to end before 7pm allows you to align with your body’s natural circadian rhythm, which influences metabolism, digestion and hormonal release, peaking during daylight hours and slowing with the onset of evening.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s new film “The Wild Robot” booted up with a better-than-expected $35 million opening weekend domestically. Director Chris Sanders’ film was originally projected to make $24-30 million in its opening weekend, but exceeded those projections to take the box office crown from “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which took in about $16 million. Tim Burton’s horror comedy had reigned over the charts for the past 3 weeks. Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” finally hit theaters after debuting at the Cannes Film Festival, but only made about $4.6 million, less than projections of $5-7 million.

Julia Roberts will receive an honorary tribute at the 50th edition of the César Award, France’s equivalent to the Oscars. The ceremony will take place on Feb. 28 at the Olympia theater in Paris. The Cesar academie said in a statement: “Julia Roberts fascinates, she is a source of inspiration and an icon of world cinema… (she) is not just a movie star, she’s also an icon of popular culture, and her influence extends far beyond her performances.” The Honorary Cesar Award, which pays tribute to artists and filmmakers’ career achievements, has previously been handed out to stars such as Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz, Robert Redford and George Clooney.

A haunted house in Pennsylvania is inviting people to tour it while nude.

If your car’s check engine light is on, the problem might be you. Or more specifically, your habit of over-filling the gas tank. As car enthusiast and TikTok user @sweet_tea recently pointed out in a video, if you regularly keep putting gas into your vehicle after the pump has clicked off repeatedly, you risk ruining your purge valve, a device used to remove excess fuel vapor. That’ll run you about $500, Sweet Tea says. And Autotrader confirmed that tip in a separate post. Not only that, a car’s charcoal canister, which absorbs fuel vapor, can also get damaged – and a fix for that will also cost another $500. Need another reason not to keep pumping gas when the pump says “No”? Solenoids, used in starting a vehicle, can also be harmed — and repairs will cost about $400. The good news? These issues will generally only occur over time, if you overfill your tank repeatedly. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3h5w9b6p

A man who used a massage gun on his face and eyes had to undergo surgery after – you guessed it – damaging his eyes. Mr. Luo (no last name given), a fitness enthusiast in China, purchased a battery-powered massage gun at the recommendation of a fitness instructor, who told him it would work wonders on his tired muscles. It proved incredibly effective, so the 42-year-old decided to use it on his eyes as well, because they often felt tired and dry. Bad idea. He later told doctors that he set it on “low” and used it on the acupuncture points around his eyes for 5 minutes at a time. But after using the massage gun on his eyes for about a week, his vision became blurry. At hospital, he was diagnosed with lens dislocation and cataracts.

BEST FOODS FOR OKTOBERFEST:

Bavaria’s legendary Oktoberfest continues through October 6. And sure – we know there’s a lot of beer to drink – but what exactly do they eat there? Here are the 5 things you need to try…

Brezeln (Pretzels): This loved pastry is usually the first thing people think of when asked to name an Oktoberfest food. What better way to soak up all that beer than with a giant knot of delicious dough? (Dip ‘em in mustard – or beer!)

Obatzda (German Beer Cheese Dip): Actually, THIS is what you should dip your pretzel in. The flavorful spread is a beer garden classic made with camembert cheese, butter — and beer!

Reibekuchen/Kartoffelpuffer (Potato Pancakes): Another stick-to-your-ribs option. Served fried golden crisp and with a variety of toppings to choose from, including savory with a salad or sweet with apple sauce.

Schnitzel: The SECOND thing people think of, after pretzels. Served breaded and fried, it is traditionally made with veal, but can also feature pork loin, chicken breast, or even fish! (When you’re at Oktoberfest, at a certain point, nothing matters!)

Bratwurst: A bratwurst sausage can be plain, smoked or cheese-flavored, and served whole or cut in slices, with a bun or without. Serving suggestion: Sauerkraut and Bratwurst Balls—2 well-known German foods, rolled into bite-sized balls, breaded and fried. Serve with Bavarian mustard (and beer – of course!)
