THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John

My sister borrowed $1000 from me about two years ago. I was in a good position to help her out, so I did. Now, my situation has changed a bit. I'm asking her to pay me back and I get excuse after excuse. She's been on three vacations this year alone, so I'm not feeling too bad about asking her to pay me back. I finally told her that I would be OK with her just paying back $600 and I'd let the rest go! She said she could pay $500, but that was... in her words... “every penny she had in her account”. I need the money to avoid a late charge, so I agreed to the $500. She sent the money over, but she accidentally hit an extra zero. She transferred me $5000 instead of the $500. She started calling me right after the transfer, but I was at work so I didn't see any of this until I had five missed calls and three messages. One of the messages was from our mother. She asked why I was not calling my sister back. First of all, I was at work, so I didn't even know I was missing calls. Secondly, supposedly she only had $500 in her account... so I'm scratching together everything possible, working three jobs to stay on track, and she's going to pay me HALF of what she owes me, and she was OK with that! What do I do? Send back the $4500 she's asking for? Send her $4000 and call it fair that my full amount was paid off? I fee like this is going to cause a problem in the family no matter what. Everyone told me not to loan her the money, but I wanted to help. Now I feel like a fool for letting her get by like this for two years! What do you think I should do?

Signed

Washing your produce before eating it is very important, because, aside from dirt, it may contain things like bacteria, fungi, viruses and pesticides, not to mention plastic contamination. Here is how to do it, say the experts: First, wash your hands. Then wash produce under cold, running water. Rub the fruits and veggies with your hands to remove dirt, pesticides and some surface germs. Wash until the surface no longer looks dirty. If you’re going to soak it, use a clean bowl instead of the sink — which may contain germs. Never use detergent or bleach, as it may be absorbed by the produce. Vinegar and baking soda can both be used to reduce bacteria and pesticides. Produce with a hard rind (such as squashes) or a firm skin (like potatoes and root vegetables) may be scrubbed with a vegetable brush until clean looking.

Coca-Cola is consumed almost everywhere, but nowhere is it more popular than in the Mexican state of Chiapas, where the average person drinks 821.2 liters (217 gallons!) of the stuff per year, about 32 times the global average. The people of Chiapas consume about 2.2 liters (74.4oz) per day, which makes it more popular than drinking water. And little wonder: Coca-Cola is sold and advertised almost everywhere in the state, and it’s almost as cheap as water, too.

Jennifer Aniston has such good memories of filming “Friends”, she doubts she’ll ever make another sitcom. The hit show, which celebrated the 30th anniversary of its premiere over the weekend, made global stars of its 6 leads – Aniston, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow and Matthew Perry. Aniston was speaking on the SmartLess podcast when she was asked if she’d make another comedy show. Her response: “If I knew it would be the same experience as I had with those guys, yes, but I doubt that will ever happen.” She added that making Friends been the favorite job of her career.

Gil Ramirez’s time on “The Golden Bachelorette” will be shrinking. The contestant allegedly has a history of stalking, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE. Ramirez’s ex-girlfriend was granted a temporary restraining order against him on June 11 — just a few days before production on the series’ inaugural season began. A source said that learning about Ramirez’s past, The Golden Bachelorette “further edited his already limited screen time and minimized him in promotional assets moving forward.”

NASA’s Juno spacecraft has sent back another batch of jaw-dropping images from its orbit around Jupiter.

The Stanley tumbler craze may have just jumped the shark. Yes, they are still very popular, and apparently, you’re just not cool unless you’re hauling a 1½ gallon…I mean liter…mug around with you all day long. But TikTok is being bombarded with vids titled “pack my Stanley with me”, where well-hydrated people add loads of accessories – basically making their tumbler a carrying case for other items. Like what? You’ll see people putting mini-backpacks into their insulated monster cups. Some fill the straw with items such as lip balm. Others have holders for rings or pills, such as Advil or Tylenol, which can be attached to the handle. And because ‘why not?’, some add on mini Stanley keychains, so even their Stanleys have Stanleys. Want more? Some Stanley TikTok’ers are also using snack trays for their cups. Detachable silicone snack trays are out there, with sections for multiple snacks. The trays have a hole in the middle to go around the top of the cup, for a hands-free snack experience. Also available are straw covers and caps, spill stoppers, protective bumpers for the bottom of the cups, ice trays made specifically for the tumbler – and of course, carrying straps and holders. WEIRD NEWS: Brought to you by WeirdGiftOfTheDay.com

A lifeboat crew in England responded to a report of a stranded person in the water — but left feeling like dummies. In a social media post, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution crew stationed in Filey said that once on the scene, the team “recovered a training dummy from the water.” The dummy turned out to have been lost by another RNLI crew in Hartlepool 2 weeks earlier. On Facebook, the Hartlepool crew thanked the Filey station for finding their dummy, named Fred, writing: “So Fred’s had an unauthorized holiday to Yorkshire”.

THINGS THAT ARE GETTING ‘OUT OF CONTROL’ THESE DAYS: (3 of 3)

Tipping Culture: Everyone agrees – but no one is doing anything about it. Why should you tip for counter service – or tip a self-checkout machine?

Subscriptions for everything: Remember when you didn’t have to give all your personal info just to watch a football game or visit a website?

Too many apps: Everything requires one these days. Good deals at stores, event tickets, parking…even a simple meal out, sometimes.

Too many ads: No one is safe. They take up half the screen, or you have to watch a video before moving on to the thing you went there for.

The Marvel Universe: Too many movies and constant TV shows turned the MCU into a convoluted mess. Do you even try to keep up anymore?

Blinding LED headlights: You can tell it’s a new car because your retinas are burning. Is this safe?

Artificial Intelligence: It’s becoming frighteningly common and pretty much unavoidable.

New slang: At one point, words like “cool” or “awesome” were radical, but at least those are legitimate words. “Bussin’” and “rizz” and “cheugy” just sound cheugy to me…

Movie remakes and sequels: See “Marvel Universe”, above…

Entry-level job requirements: Why would they ask that you have a degree or 2 for an entry-level job that pays next to nothing?

Sensational news: If every story is “breaking” and “sensational”, then none are. Please make your clickbait matter!
