Show Notes for Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13, 2024

Today we visit with Jane Dorian. She was, by Jerry’s own admission, the most important person in his life (other than his mother) and as the manager of the Jerry Herman LLC and estate, she will share rare and personal insights into the mind of the legendary man himself. His estate has two auctions in the near future.

Could it be that the secret to a longer life lies in…pond scum? A new study says that phytoene, a colorless compound found in microalgae, seems to have remarkable anti-aging properties, including extending lifespan. Spanish and British researchers used a type of tiny worm in their study, and found that the ones treated with phytoene showed increased resistance to oxidative stress, suggesting that phytoene acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from damage caused by harmful free radicals. The researchers also found that phytoene had a powerful protective effect against Alzheimer’s disease, and the positive effect of extending lifespan. They say their findings open up intriguing possibilities for future anti-aging research.

Robert Englund wants to return to the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” series for an animated movie. The 77-year-old starred as the dreaded ‘Freddy Krueger’ in the horror franchise from the 1984 original until the 2003 spin-off “Freddy vs. Jason”, and when ComicBook.com pitched Englund on the idea of an R-rated animated flick, he said: “Let’s go for it. We’ll have lunch!” Englund suggested “A nice, dark” prequel, featuring a “retro” Freddy Krueger, set in the 1970s, that would follow the killer before he terrorized young children in their dreams.

We have some details on Daniel Day-Lewis’ surprise return to acting, after he was spotted on-set this week. The 67-year-old Oscar winner was photographed driving a motorbike through the streets of Manchester, England, with actor Sean Bean behind him. Day-Lewis is set to star in the film “Anemone”, to be directed by his son, first-time director Ronan Day-Lewis. It will be Daniel Day-Lewis’ first acting role since 2017’s Phantom Thread, which the 3-time Oscar-winner performer had announced to be his final project before retiring. The father and son duo co-wrote the script for Anemone, which explores family bonds, specifically those involving fathers, sons and brothers.

Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk has teamed up with “Jackass” star Steve-O on a new skating anthology series. The pair have announced the scripted project “Sk8 or Die: The Lee Ralph Story”, which will tell the story of the skateboarder who vanished from the scene after reaching stardom in the 1980s. The show is currently in development, and the plan is to present a biographical anthology, with each season telling the story of a different skater. Hawk and Steve-O are both on board as producers, while “F9” star Vinnie Bennett will play New Zealand skater Lee Ralph.

A study says the average woman spends 5 of the 168 hours each week in a bad mood.

Have you ever noticed that the word “internet” is capitalized sometimes? Yeah, don’t do that. The question of whether ‘internet’ deserves an upper-case ‘I’ is controversial. Experts say that using the capital ‘I’ was common in the early days of the Web, especially in technical writing. However, as the internet has become part of our lives, most people now write it with a lowercase ‘i’. Dialect can make a difference, too, as capitalizing ‘Internet’ is more common in American English than British English. Grammer experts agree that while ultimately, it is a matter of preference, why would you give a noun a capital letter — unless you do the same thing for “shoe”?

There has definitely been a movement lately to keep mobile phones out of classrooms, in hopes of avoiding the distractions that come with having access to social media, messaging, and the like. But according to a new study, there might be another way to let the teachers teach, without students having to leave their phones at the door or in a backpack – and that is allowing for one-minute “phone breaks” during class. In a study carried out among college students, those who were permitted to use their phones for very brief periods of time saw more classroom focus, less overall phone use, and higher test scores. The study also found that when granted unrestricted access to their phones during class, students used their phones for non-academic purposes as often as 10 times per day.

WEIRD NEWS: Brought to you by WeirdGiftOfTheDay.com

The organizers of what was supposed to be a very long treasure hunt are baffled that someone not only found the small gold statue they hid in the Massachusetts woods — but are also disappointed that the winner has yet to claim his crypto prize worth $27,000. A couple out hiking say they saw the winner with the trophy in hand and spoke with him. The supposed winner said he is a meteorologist who was able to determine the location of the prize from within a 27-mile search radius by (if you can believe it…) analyzing cloud patterns seen in a livestream setup at the trophy’s location. Organizers say it’s “surreal” that the man hasn’t claimed his prize. The couple who spoke with him said “He was just super excited he had the trophy.”
