By now, everyone knows that the internet can be a dangerous place. But apparently many of us didn’t clue in to that fact soon enough. A new study has revealed that literally BILLIONS of people have been the target of cybercriminals at some point. The survey found that half of all respondents have fallen victim to a cyberattack or scam. Of 20,000 adults from around the world, 45% said that their personal data, like banking or email info, has been compromised by a hacking attempt or scam. And even though most agree that scams have become more sophisticated due to AI, a horrifyingly low 39% of people said that they believe simply using a username and password is the most secure way to protect your accounts.

Some companies these days are expanding their employee benefits coverage to include things like elder care and paid time off for the death of a pet, in an effort at increasing worker loyalty, retention and ultimately improving the bottom line. Some firms are also offering work perks such as coverage for expenses involved in fertility and family planning, financial and emotional support, mental health coverage, climate change and environmental support, and more. According to the 2024 US Benefits Trend Report, 59% of workers these days are looking for nutrition and exercise programs, 58% want mental fitness programs, and 44% are interested in caregiving for elderly or ill family members.

Andrew Garfield says he’d play ‘’Spider-Man’ again — under a few conditions. He said to Esquire that he’d “100% come back if it was the right thing…if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into.” Garfield, who played the superhero, and his alter-ego ‘Peter Parker’ in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man”, and returned for 2 sequels, said “I love that character, and it brings joy.”

Although details of “Yellowstone’s” ending are being kept top secret, there is one part of the final episodes that is public knowledge: Kevin Costner will not reprise his role of family patriarch ‘John Dutton’. What exactly happens to him is unclear, but according to star Kelly Reilly, who plays ‘Beth’, Costner’s absence didn’t change anything about the ending that creator Taylor Sheridan had been working toward from day one. Reilly told EW: “The absence was part of the ending…that was already written into the…story. It was always going to happen, it just happened a little bit differently.” Yellowstone premieres its final season on Nov. 10.

Rugrats” is returning to the big screen. The beloved 1990s animated series from Nickelodeon is getting the live-action treatment from Paramount, with “Pitch Perfect” director Jason Moore on board to direct the new project. He’ll be working from a script by “Saturday Night Live” regular Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. Paramount describes the feature as a “a live-action CG hybrid,” based on the original series. That means yes, the babies will be CGI. The series has already inspired a number of theatrical films, including 1998’s “The Rugrats Movie,” 2000’s “Rugrats in Paris” and 2003’s “Rugrats Go Wild.”

If a giant mirror was placed 10 light years away from Earth, and you looked at it through a telescope, you’d theoretically see 20 years into the past.

Could your cell phone some day be able to transmit smells, similar to how today’s models can wirelessly provide you with audio and video? Scientists are working on it, if you can believe it. Well, the phone wouldn’t actually transmit scent particles. The process of digital scent technology would use a small number of cartridges, each containing a specific scent. Just like how pixels on your phone’s screen mix 3 colors to create images, these scent cartridges could mix to create different smells. The plan is that when you receive a digital scent code, your phone could mix tiny amounts of the different scents from the cartridges to create the desired smell. This mix would then be released through a small vent on the phone, allowing you to smell it. No word at this point how far along researchers have come in their quest to allow your friends to send you the smell of the delicious chocolate chip cookies they are baking – or something considerably less appetizing!

Moo Deng, the viral baby pigmy hippo, now has her own crypto, because, of COURSE she does. Given the sudden popularity of the Thai national treasure whose name roughly translates as “bouncy pork,” it was only a matter of time before someone turned her into a digital asset. And it’s also no surprise Moo Deng Coin has shot up 1,400% since it was created less than 3 weeks ago. But memecoins, no matter how cute, are not a smart financial play, according to experts. Like any fun internet sensation, memecoins tend to have a short lifespan, soaring as they inspire FOMO in crypto traders – then tanking shortly after. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/ye2yuu4n

→ “Caviar — pretty sure people are just paying for the bragging rights, not the taste.”

→ “Those giant milkshakes with absurd toppings like a slice of cake, jumbo swirly lollipops, and cotton candy/fairy floss.”

→ “Lobster. Anything that has to be dunked/drenched in butter to enjoy can’t be all that good.”

→ “Burgers with 5 different sauces and 20 different ingredients. People are eating mush and telling themselves it’s good.” (This person is SO wrong!)

→ “Olives: the Devil’s Grapes. Gross things.”

→ “Raw oysters for me. So expensive, maybe gonna make you seriously sick.”

→ “Turkey, without a doubt. Disgusting.” (Whaaaa?)

→ “Blue cheese. Smells and tastes like vomit to me.” (Not wrong!)

A new poll says that one-third of adults experience anxiety when they’re forced to – do math. The study of 3,000 adults in the UK found that almost a third (29%) actively try to avoid anything to do with numbers and data. And with recent inflationary pressures, and the increasing cost of living putting greater pressure on people’s math skills in order to make ends meet, 29% also said this affects their mental wellness. And why do some of us find working with numbers so difficult? More than half said they stopped studying math in school as soon as they were allowed to. And 66% said they have to agree that you don’t realize how important math skills are until you need them to navigate your daily life.

If your child is a picky eater, you might have yourself to blame. A new study by British researchers found that food fussiness in children is “a largely genetic trait,” while other factors, such as the types of foods eaten at home and where meals are eaten, may only be significant when the child is a toddler. The research also found that food pickiness tends to peak when a child is 7 years old, often declining slightly as they enter adolescence. The study found that environmental factors can, however, have an impact on a child’s food pickiness when they are a toddler. This means that early interventions to help them learn to eat a wider range of food could reduce their pickiness in the future.

A study shows that many office workers feel they are simply “too tired” to exercise.

In what may signal the end of privacy as we know it, two Harvard students say they were able to use facial recognition software and Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses to almost instantly identify random strangers on the street, and compile their personal info from the internet. In a video on X, AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio show how they built I-XRAY, which uses the glasses to capture people’s images, then identify them through a publicly accessible facial recognition search site, and use a large language model to compile the person’s information. They were able to access people’s addresses, the names of their parents, and photos in just minutes. They say they conducted their experiment to highlight the privacy concerns that come with consumer tech – and will NOT release the code for the program.

COMMON-SENSE THAT ISN’T SO COMMON:

A BuzzFeed discussion recently asked people to share the common-sense things they thought most people knew, but it turned out they did not. Here are the best responses…

☞ “The days of the year shift one day ahead each year. So, Oct. 1 this year is on a Tuesday, which means in 2025 it will be a Wednesday, and in 2026, it will be a Thursday. In leap years, the shift is 2 days.”

☞ “On plastic wrap and aluminum foil boxes, there are punch tabs on the sides that hold the roll in place.”

☞ “It’s almost always against the law not to have a house number. It is imperative for 911/EMT/police and fire departments.”

☞ “Antibiotics don’t work on viruses.”

☞ “I’m amazed when people don’t know that even-numbered highways run east–west, and odd-numbered highways run north–south (in the US)”.

☞ “The left lane on the (highway) is for *fast* drivers and passing. The right lane is for the *slow* drivers.”

☞ “When walking — down an aisle or on a sidewalk — always stay to your right. This will allow people to pass easily and avoid that awkward sidestep thing or being in the middle blocking everyone.” (Same thing on escalators, people!)

☞ “I had no idea that if you swipe on a locked iPhone screen, the camera pops up.”

☞ “Christmas is in the summertime in the Southern Hemisphere. Seems logical and something everyone knows, but some dupes think it’s snowing in South America in December.”

☞ “‘Loosen’ and ‘unloosen’ mean exactly the same thing. Look it up in any dictionary.

Could it be that the secret to a longer life lies in…pond scum? A new study says that phytoene, a colorless compound found in microalgae, seems to have remarkable anti-aging properties, including extending lifespan. Spanish and British researchers used a type of tiny worm in their study, and found that the ones treated with phytoene showed increased resistance to oxidative stress, suggesting that phytoene acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from damage caused by harmful free radicals. The researchers also found that phytoene had a powerful protective effect against Alzheimer’s disease, and the positive effect of extending lifespan. They say their findings open up intriguing possibilities for future anti-aging research.

Robert Englund wants to return to the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” series for an animated movie. The 77-year-old starred as the dreaded ‘Freddy Krueger’ in the horror franchise from the 1984 original until the 2003 spin-off “Freddy vs. Jason”, and when ComicBook.com pitched Englund on the idea of an R-rated animated flick, he said: “Let’s go for it. We’ll have lunch!” Englund suggested “A nice, dark” prequel, featuring a “retro” Freddy Krueger, set in the 1970s, that would follow the killer before he terrorized young children in their dreams.

We have some details on Daniel Day-Lewis’ surprise return to acting, after he was spotted on-set this week. The 67-year-old Oscar winner was photographed driving a motorbike through the streets of Manchester, England, with actor Sean Bean behind him. Day-Lewis is set to star in the film “Anemone”, to be directed by his son, first-time director Ronan Day-Lewis. It will be Daniel Day-Lewis’ first acting role since 2017’s Phantom Thread, which the 3-time Oscar-winner performer had announced to be his final project before retiring. The father and son duo co-wrote the script for Anemone, which explores family bonds, specifically those involving fathers, sons and brothers.

Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk has teamed up with “Jackass” star Steve-O on a new skating anthology series. The pair have announced the scripted project “Sk8 or Die: The Lee Ralph Story”, which will tell the story of the skateboarder who vanished from the scene after reaching stardom in the 1980s. The show is currently in development, and the plan is to present a biographical anthology, with each season telling the story of a different skater. Hawk and Steve-O are both on board as producers, while “F9” star Vinnie Bennett will play New Zealand skater Lee Ralph.

Have you ever noticed that the word “internet” is capitalized sometimes? Yeah, don’t do that. The question of whether ‘internet’ deserves an upper-case ‘I’ is controversial. Experts say that using the capital ‘I’ was common in the early days of the Web, especially in technical writing. However, as the internet has become part of our lives, most people now write it with a lowercase ‘i’. Dialect can make a difference, too, as capitalizing ‘Internet’ is more common in American English than British English. Grammer experts agree that while ultimately, it is a matter of preference, why would you give a noun a capital letter — unless you do the same thing for “shoe”?

There has definitely been a movement lately to keep mobile phones out of classrooms, in hopes of avoiding the distractions that come with having access to social media, messaging, and the like. But according to a new study, there might be another way to let the teachers teach, without students having to leave their phones at the door or in a backpack – and that is allowing for one-minute “phone breaks” during class. In a study carried out among college students, those who were permitted to use their phones for very brief periods of time saw more classroom focus, less overall phone use, and higher test scores. The study also found that when granted unrestricted access to their phones during class, students used their phones for non-academic purposes as often as 10 times per day.

Some scientists are calling for flights to slow down, because slower airplane speeds would help save the planet. Researchers at the University of Cambridge have announced their idea to help the aviation industry get to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 — by mandating longer flight times. Their “bold measure” would see flight times slowed by 15%, which would add about 50 minutes of travel time to pretty much every transatlantic flight. They say the proposal would cut fuel consumption by 5-7%, and would reduce the industry’s overall 4% contribution to climate change.

The world’s tallest mountain is getting taller. Mount Everest is 15-50m (50-165ft.) taller than it would otherwise be because a river is eroding rock and soil at its base, helping push it upwards, according to a new study. University College London researchers say that a river basin 75km (47 miles) away is causing the world’s highest peak to rise by up to 2mm a year. A study co-author likened the process to “throwing a load of cargo off a ship”, causing the ship to become lighter, and “float a little higher”. Another factor in Everest’s rise is continued pressure from the collision of the tectonic plates which formed the Himalayan mountains in the first place, 40-50 million years ago.
