Nowadays, it’s common for people to speak to their smart devices to make grocery lists – and students are more likely to takes notes in class on a computer than write them down. And how many of us keep track of appointments digitally, rather than on a paper calendar? It turns out, though, that using digital devices aren’t very effective at helping us remember things. A growing amount of research shows that handwriting stimulates specific brain connections that are very important in creating new memories. The most recent study was published earlier this year in the journal Frontiers in Psychology. Researchers in Norway asked university students to write individual words either using a digital pen on a touchscreen or using a single finger to type — while measuring electrical activity in their brains. They found that brain connectivity patterns were far more elaborate and widespread for those who wrote by hand compared to those who typed. They concluded that the precisely-controlled hand movements that occur when writing lead to complex patterns in the brain that promote learning.

Lost” star Matthew Fox has joined the cast of “Madison”, the upcoming “Yellowstone” spinoff from Taylor Sheridan. Fox has taken on a lead role opposite Michelle Pfeiffer, joining already-announced cast members Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, Beau Garrett and Amiah Miller. Fox will play ‘Paul’, a self-reliant bachelor who loves the outdoors. Madison, previously titled “2024”, will be the third spin-off series in the “Yellowstone” universe, following “1883” and “1923.”

It’s the one where you can own a piece of “Friends” history. To celebrate the upcoming 30th anniversary of the show’s premiere, Julien’s Auctions is selling a nostalgia-inducing collection of gems from the set, including sweaters worn by stars Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston — and one very familiar orange couch. The auction will take place on Sept. 23. The big-ticket item is expected to be a replica of the gang’s beloved orange Central Perk couch. The studio-made sofa is estimated to go for $2,000 to $3,000. A studio-made replica of the “Central Perk” sign will be available, too. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3m5b6ss3

Researchers say your social media habit could be making you unhappy.

Eye doctors are warning against undergoing a relatively new quick surgical procedure to change the patient’s eye color. The cosmetic surgery has become a popular trend in parts of Europe recently, and started taking off in the US after influencers revealed their dramatic eye color transformations on social media. There are 2 different procedures available. One, called ‘iris implants’ has not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for cosmetic purposes. The other, called keratopigmentation, involves a surgeon using a needle or laser to make space in the cornea, then injecting pigment into the cornea to hide the original iris color, like a tattoo for the eye. In January, the American Academy of Ophthalmology issued a warning about the risk of vision loss and complications. The process can cost about $12,000.

A city in France is baring all with a museum exhibit on nudity — which guests can view in the buff themselves. A spokesperson for The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations Marseille says it was “only natural” to allow guests to see the nudity exhibit without their clothes on. Its recent unveiling saw 80-some visitors put themselves on full display in the curtain-covered room. France is seen as the leading destination for naturists, and now, the country’s centuries culture of nudity – or naturism, is on display via the exhibit’s 600 photos, videos and “everyday objects.” One caveat: While guests are welcome to doff their duds when visiting the display, shoes are required – to “avoid getting splinters”.

THINGS DENTISTS SAY YOU JUST SHOULDN’T DO: (PART ONE)

These are the bad dental habits to avoid for a healthy smile, according to a dentist and professor of dentistry . . .

Don’t fall for DIY dentistry trends: No matter how popular they are on TikTok or wherever, never try those whitening recipes or 3D printing aligners without talking to a professional first.

Never play contact sports without a mouth guard: A professionally fitted sports guard can spare you a lot of pain and expense, in case something goes wrong, causing an injury to your teeth.

Don’t use your teeth as a tool: We’re all tempted to use our teeth to open packages, or even twist off bottle caps. This can mess with crowns and fillings, as well as your perfect teeth – and can lead to things like root canals and other repair jobs.

Never wear a drugstore appliance without your dentist’s approval: Over-the-counter appliances, like night guard or sports guards, can sometimes cause teeth to shift. And to fix them could require an investment in full orthodontics. (Same goes for buying USED — I guess!)

Never have a procedure done abroad without thorough research: The standard of care might be different in other countries. If you plan a trip for ‘medical tourism’, make sure that you know that things are sterilized properly, and done by a reputable organization.

Don’t brush your teeth immediately after eating acidic food: Hold off for 45 minutes, because the acids in certain foods have a temporary softening effect on the enamel layer of our teeth.

Don’t take your teeth for granted: Yes, we’d all like to have straight, white teeth, but remember: even if yours aren’t perfect, they still serve a very important purpose – helping you ingest the nutrition you need to power all your body’s functions.
