SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH: Brought to you by BetterCreditCards.com

Researchers have found that frequent cell phone use may lead to a higher chance of developing cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes. A University of Toronto team analyzed health data from over 440,000 people. Results showed that those who use their mobile phones for an hour or more per week have a 10% higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, compared to those who use their phones less. But before you panic and toss your phone, note that this study doesn’t prove that mobile phones directly cause heart problems. It simply suggests a complex relationship between our phone habits, lifestyle factors, and heart health.

It’s becoming more common than ever. According to OpenTable, solo dining reservations in the US are up 29% over the last 2 years. And a survey revealed this summer that 60% of us have dined alone at a restaurant at least once in the last year. Experts believe the likely reasons for the spike in solo feasts are a combination of remote work and more people marrying later, thus living alone.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is holding on well in its second weekend with a projected $52 million total domestically, just a 53% drop from its $111 million opening. The Tim Burton sequel is set for a running domestic total of $188 million by this morning, just short of the first “Beetlejuice” in 1988, after adjusting for inflation. New horror release “Speak No Evil” came second with about $12 million, followed by “Deadpool & Wolverine” with $5.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $621 million.

The animated ‘Barney’ reboot will premiere Oct. 14 on Max. This will mark the first time in 14 years that the iconic purple dinosaur is returning to TV. The new iteration, “Barney’s World” will be set in a playground where Barney is joined by his dino-friends ‘Billy’ and ‘Baby Bop’, as well as 3 kid best friends. The Oct. 14 debut will be followed by a premiere on Cartoon Network on Oct. 18. Some episodes will also be available on YouTube starting Oct. 11.

It’s official. Netflix has confirmed Yerin Ha will join the Season 4 cast of “Bridgerton” as the love interest for ‘Benedict Bridgerton’, played by Luke Thompson. Ha will portray ‘Sophie Baek’ (‘Beckett’ in the book series), who has a slow burn romance with Benedict. Benedict, despite his brothers both being happily married, isn’t ready to settle down — “until he meets a captivating Lady in Silver at his mother’s masquerade ball.” The streamer also unveiled a first-look teaser featuring Ha as Sophie. A study has found that 20% of us say we would fail a written driving test if we were asked to do it today.

News surfaced last week that Campbell’s Soup Co. plans to change its name to “The Campbell’s Co. Why? CEO Mark Clouse said the “subtle yet important change” will retain the company’s iconic name “while better reflecting the full breadth” of its portfolio, which includes brands like Prego sauce and Goldfish crackers. Here are some other examples of companies that have rebranded, often losing the mention of the specific item that they were best known for…

Dunkin’: In 2019, Dunkin’ Donuts shortened its name to reflect its increasing emphasis on coffee and other drinks.

Krispy Kreme: It also dropped ‘doughnuts’ from its name, although the word still appears prominently on the chain’s logo and boxes of sugary perfection.

Domino’s: Took the word “pizza” out of its logo and off storefronts in 2012, citing menu expansions and other in-store updates. But its parent company is still named “Domino’s Pizza Inc.”

Starbucks: In 1971, it was known as “Starbucks Coffee, Tea, and Spices.” In 1987, the name was shortened to “Starbucks Coffee” — and by 2011, Starbucks introduced its latest logo, which doesn’t feature the company’s name at all. Starbucks officially operates as “Starbucks Coffee Co.”

KFC: It hasn’t used the “Kentucky Fried Chicken” name for decades. The fast-food chain shortened its name in 1991, supposedly to draw attention away from the unhealthy connotations of the word “fried”.

WEIRD NEWS: Brought to you by WeirdGiftOfTheDay.com

Police are looking for a man whose pants caught fire in an alleged arson attempt that went wrong. Richmond BC RCMP shared a photo showing 2 men, one on the ground with a pained expression as he reaches for his blazing pants, while the other apparently tries to put out the flames. Cops responded to an alarm at a business, finding a broken window and a small fire in the front. Surveillance video revealed 2 men wearing masks had approached the business, and one of the suspect’s pants caught fire in the incident. RCMP said “The pants continued to burn” despite the suspects’ efforts to put the flames out.

STRANGE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ARE CONSIDERED BAD LUCK:

Wishing someone ‘Happy Birthday’ before their birthday:Many Germans believe doing so will cause misfortune to everyone involved. Instead, they sometimes gather the night before a birthday and begin celebrating exactly at midnight. (But I like to celebrate my birthday WEEK!)

Changing your bed on a Friday: An old wives’ tales says if you turn your mattress that day, you’ll be cursed with bad dreams. Others say the bad-luck day is Sunday.

Carrying bananas on a ship: In the 1700s, many ships that were lost or shipwrecked were carrying bananas, so sailors, being a superstitious bunch, decided that bananas on a boat meant bad news.

Renaming a boat: This goes back to ancient times, when sailors believed that the name of every boat was written in the ledger of Poseidon. If you dared change the name of a boat, you’d incur the sea god’s wrath.

Mixing beers: In the Czech Republic, whose people drink more beer per capita than anyone, it’s believed that if you pour one type of beer into a mug containing another type, you’re in for some misfortune.

Tuesday the 13th: While many cultures see Friday the 13th as bad news, in Spain, the 13th day of the month is unlucky when it falls on a Tuesday. In Spanish, the word for Tuesday is “Martes,” which comes from “Mars”, the Roman god of war, so Tuesday spells trouble.

GOOD NEWS: Brought to you by GenesisGoldIRA.com

You’ve heard this story by now, but it is definitely good news that bears repeating. Police in Nashville praised singer Jon Bon Jovi for helping prevent a tragedy by speaking to a woman who was on the ledge of a bridge. He and his team were at the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge as a woman stood precariously over the Cumberland River. Security video shows Bon Jovi and another member of his crew, who were there for a video shoot, slowly approach before arriving at the young woman’s side. He leans over the railing and speaks with the woman, while his colleague steps behind her and begins to touch her shoulder. The potential disaster appears to conclude with the young woman turning around and hugging Bon Jovi, before they help her back over the edge. A few minutes later, she is seen leaving the bridge with the rock star. The event took place on Sept. 10, Suicide Prevention Day.

Our second story about rich dudes doing good things centers around NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley. He donated the first installment of the $1 million he promised to an academy in New Orleans, thanks to 2 groundbreaking young mathematicians. He made his first $100,000 contribution to St. Mary’s Academy, the private school where Calcea Johnson and Ne’Kiya Jackson, cracked a centuries-old mathematical equation. As featured in “60 Minutes”, they solved the Pythagorean Theorem — an equation that had stumped mathematicians for roughly 2,000 years. The segment piqued the interest of Barkley, who decided to make the $1 million grant to help the institution continue to hone the talents of students like Jackson and Johnson.
