Show Notes for Monday, September 02, 2024

This #MovieStarMonday we visit with actress/comedian Lauren Lapkus (The Wrong Missy, Netflix's The Characters, and Orange Is The New Black)

Her new show Haunting shares weekly, real-life paranormal stories told by those who experienced them first-hand. Some will be unsettling... Some unnerving. And some are even downright terrifying! Haunting brings audiences into the story through first-hand accounts and immersive audio, giving listeners the feeling of coming face-to-face with the unexplainable. Lauren plays the host, Theresa (Teh-rez-ah), an "influencer" who tragically died before she could get the proverbial "little blue check in life." Theresa is stuck in the Eternal Twilight until she figures out how to finish her "unfinished business." Just like when she was alive and active on every social media platform, Theresa promises to always give her audience the -- mostly -- unfiltered look into her life, now afterlife. But instead of snarky social commentary, OOTDs, and hyper-edited selfies, with the help of her producer, Len, and succubus from Hell turned intern, Naomi, Theresa aims to help the living see that ghosts are just former people who want to have a little fun like anyone else, even though it's often in the form of mortal fear and suffering.

Do you have a friend who always seems to be complaining about something? It turns out, venting about what bothers you might be a good idea. UCLA research suggests that venting isn’t just a way to blow off steam—it’s a clever social tool that can make you look better in the eyes of the listener. By sharing frustrations, we might be subconsciously strengthening our bonds and even getting extra perks or favors.

Kentucky has more bourbon than people. If bourbon is your drink of choice, then you might want to plan a road trip to Kentucky. The state is not only responsible for 95 percent of the world's bourbon, according to The Atlantic, but there is also so much of it that the 4.7 million barrels in the state's distilleries outnumber the 4.3 million people living in the area.

Ben Affleck has been spotted for the first time since Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce. He stepped out without his wedding ring as he headed to an office building in Los Angeles, on Tuesday, after news broke of J-Lo’s divorce filing. Affleck was photographed walking in the parking lot of the building while wearing a gray T-shirt, jeans and black-tinted sunglasses. He has been spotted on several other occasions at the same building in recent weeks, as he spent the summer apart from Lopez, amid reports of a split. She filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday, without an attorney, and listed a separation date of April 26, 2024.

A Victoria Beckham docuseries is in the works. Netflix has announced that it is in production on a project with the Spice Girls star, posting on X: “The series will follow her reinvention as a Creative Director of her own brand, offering exclusive access to Victoria, her fashion and beauty business, and her never-before-seen archives.” Victoria’s venture comes nearly a year after husband David Beckham launched his own docuseries “Beckham” with Netflix. That project, which featured the soccer star’s journey from the sports world to parenthood, not only sparked several viral moments, it also received 5 Emmy nominations.

Patrick J. Adams might be trading his suit in for a saddle, thanks to his new role in the “Yellowstone” spinoff series “The Madison”. Paramount has announced that Adams — who played ‘Mike Ross’ in the 2010s legal-dram “Suits”, has joined the cast of the latest Taylor Sheridan series. He’ll star as ‘Russell McIntosh’, a young investment banker. It was previously revealed that the upcoming spinoff has landed Michelle Pfeiffer as both star and executive producer.

It turns out that “Hello Kitty” isn’t a cat. Japanese company Sanrio has set the record straight about its beloved character, ahead of Hello Kitty’s 50th anniversary. On the “Today” show, senior vice president of marketing and brand management Jill Koch said: “She’s actually a little girl born and raised in the suburbs in London. She has a mom and dad and a twin sister Minnie, who is also her best friend. She enjoys baking cookies and making new friends.” Need more? Koch also indicated that Hello Kitty “weighs 3 apples and is 5 apples tall.” She also revealed the shocking news that Hello Kitty has a pet cat named ‘Charmmy Kitty’.

WEIRD NEWS: Brought to you by WeirdGiftOfTheDay.com

The Insurance company Nationwide has announced the finalists for its “Hambone Award”, which celebrates the most unusual pet insurance claims of the year. The Hambone Award is named in honor of a dog who ate an entire holiday ham while stuck in a refrigerator. The company says its intention is “to shed light on the everyday and sometimes bizarre incidents that can befall our beloved pets.” This year’s finalists include:

Archie, a New Jersey dog who injured his paws when he broke through a vintage plate glass door while trying to alert his family of the mail carrier’s arrival.

Bear, a Pennsylvania corgi, who bit into a bottle of nail adhesive and glued his mouth shut.

A New Jersey parrot named Clover whose growth spurt caused the toenails on her feet to hook together.

A Florida dog named Irma who suffered from gastrointestinal issues that turned out to have been caused by eating metal wire pieces from a barbecue brush.

A Virginia dog named Gordon who swallowed 2 large rocks from her owner’s garden.

And Lambeau, a North Carolina dog who ate more than 250 jigsaw puzzle pieces.

All of the nominated pets are fine now, and the public is invited to vote on the Hambone Award. The winner will be announced Aug. 27.

STATE FAIR FUN:

It’s State Fair season in the USA! And while they may have originated as a way to buy and sell agricultural products, they’ve since grown to encompass some of the oddest, quirkiest, and most wholesome competitions. Here are a few you’re unlikely to find anywhere else…

The mullet competition: Several state fairs feature this hair-raising event, including in Indiana and Illinois. According to the official USA Mullet Championship, judges consider 4 criteria: length, style, uniqueness…and showmanship?

The husband calling competition: In this one, well, the title says it all. Some repeatedly yell their husband’s name, while others adopt a more artistic yodel.

The grocery bagging competition: This is a fav at the South Dakota State Fair. To be eligible, contestants must hold a job where they spend at least 40% of their time bagging groceries. Points are awarded based on speed, technique, weight distribution between bags, style, attitude, and appearance.

Pet Rock Olympics: This Colorado State Fair event is broken into 2 categories: best dressed and farthest roller. And for one family, the competition is a tradition that spans 3 generations. (3 VERY BORING generations…)

The skillet toss and anvil throw: The goal of this competition, at the Fryeburg Fair in Maine, is to throw the iron objects as far and straight as possible without going out of bounds. Women toss a cast iron skillet — men throw an anvil.
