If you want to be happy, ditch your job and start doing arts and crafts. Actually, I wouldn’t take it THAT far, but a new study says that engaging in creative pursuits boosts happiness more than having a good job. Researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK say they have determined that taking part in what they call “Creating Arts and Crafting” activities results in increased life satisfaction, a greater sense that life is worthwhile, and higher levels of happiness. And perhaps surprisingly, the positive effects of participating in creative activities were more apparent than the benefits from other well-known positive factors — such as age, gender, health, and employment status. In other words, regardless of your life circumstances, picking up a paintbrush or a pair of knitting needles could give your mood a big boost!

What will you be doing at precisely 12:06pm Monday? Nothing, probably, because according to new research, that’s exactly the time each Monday when procrastination kicks in. A poll conducted by Talker Research found that 71% of us are guilty of procrastination, and three-quarters of us feel guilty when doing so. The most popular things to do when we should be doing something else were found to be watching TV and movies (50%), scrolling on their phone (of course, 42%), and laying in bed (39%).

James Gandolfini’s portrayal of ‘Tony Soprano’ remains one of the greatest TV performances of the last 25 years, but working on the show day in and day out was definitely a grind. In the new documentary “Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos”, Steven Van Zandt, who played ‘Silvio’, recalls how the schedule “Got to him”. Van Zandt said: “Every other day, we would go to a bar. We would have the exact same conversation. We would get drunk. He’d say, ‘I’m done. I’m not going back’”. Van Zandt would explain to him that there a few hundred people depending on him, and he’d always return, but a few times, he did “disappear for a few days.”

Did ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’ spring for an updated smile? Johnny Depp flashed what looked like new pearly whites after his less-than-perfect teeth went viral last year. In an Instagram video, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star was seen on vacation in the Bahamas. He interacted with patrons and staff at a beachside bar in Exuma, flashing a sparkling, toothy grin several times for those filming. Depp was the center of attention at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival when pics of him walking the red carpet took the internet by storm, with many focused on his discolored and crooked chompers. Depp reps did not respond to a request for comment. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/5xtrprfp

Johnny Depp’s career as an artist continues to blow up. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star will launch his first “immersive experiential exhibition” of his work, titled “A Bunch of Stuff,” next month in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. It will include “never-before-seen artworks, as well as many personal artifacts and ephemera from [Depp’s] studios” — and will “be akin to a studio visit with the man himself and stepping into his world.” The multimedia exhibition “A Bunch of Stuff” opens to the public Oct. 4, and fans can sign up for tickets at www.abunchofstuff.com

A study has found that 50% of men say they couldn’t tell you their partner’s shoe size.

It seems that every month or 2, the major restaurants come up with a new, novelty menu item. But this innovation is about the packaging, not the food. Pizza Hut is offering a special pizza box that can be turned into a mini table. That’s right: the table box folds out into a base that can support a pizza box – perfect for when you’re moving, and it’s time to feed the helpers – and maybe the furniture isn’t set up yet. The pizza chain has made its new table box available with an order of a large pizza in Dallas, Charlotte, and Orlando, which are among the top moving destinations in the US. In a statement, Pizza Hut said: “Many can relate to the chaos that comes with moving, and the last thing you want to worry about is unpacking to enjoy a hard-earned meal at the end of a long day.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4p4c366e

A couple just wanted to eke out some quality time together, but it ended going horribly wrong when their vehicle rolled into a river. A Philadelphia police spokesperson said the two were “enjoying each other’s company” in the early hours of Aug. 28, before the car entered the water. Cops believe the pair was “getting busy” when the vehicle was accidentally shifted into gear. Both were able to escape the vehicle before it rolled into the water, and they were unharmed. They have not been identified by police.

HAPPINESS HACKS’ BACKED BY SCIENCE (including some you’re almost guaranteed to hate…):

University of Bristol researchers say that you’ll only experience the lasting benefits of happiness if you practice these tips regularly. In a study, those who did were found to have better mental wellbeing 2 years later…

Conducting acts of kindness: It’s true! Just try it.

Increasing social connections: For example, try striking up conversations with strangers. (People really do this?)

Savoring experiences: For that matter, savor each meal as well. You’d be surprised how good a ham sandwich can taste if you really pay attention!

Drawing attention to the positive parts of your days: For example, write down “3 Good Things” that happened today.)

Expressing gratitude: Try writing a gratitude letter to someone you never properly thanked.

Getting sufficient sleep: The researchers pointed out that while 7-plus hours is recommended, some people may need 8 or 9 hours in order to be well-rested.

Engaging in physical activity: OK, this one may not bring you happiness at first…!

Trying out mindfulness and other meditation practices: It can’t hurt – unlike that last one about physical activity!
