If you’d like to enjoy better sleep, try doing a few sets of squats in the evening. A study by University of Otago in New Zealand found a link between short bursts of nightly strength training and about half an hour of extra sleep. The researchers chose squats because the exercise recruits the largest muscles – and test subjects didn’t need equipment or substantial space.

It’s the current viral workout – and you can’t “beat” it. “Cardio drumming” is where you place an exercise ball in a bucket and whack it with drumsticks to the beat of a song, as a way of burning calories, relieving stress, and strengthening bones. A recent TikTok clip showing a group of women cardio drumming to ‘7 Rings’ by Ariana Grande smashed 19.3 million views and garnered nearly 30,000 comments. One doctor pointed out that this type of class “isn’t just about fitness… they have created an incredible community” and it will “lead to better self-esteem, more motivation and probably impact multiple other areas in their life.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4tnw6eek

The full cast of “Dancing With the Stars” Season 32 was announced on “Good Morning America” yesterday. A few ABC favorites from “The Bachelor” franchises will be joining the 33rd season, along with other athletes, Hollywood stars and reality stars. The full list: Super Bowl champ Danny Amendola, “The Bachelor’s” Joey Graziadei, NBA champ Dwight Howard, Chandler Kinney from “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin”, Olympian Ilona Maher , model Brooks, Phaedra Parks from “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”, plus Eric Roberts, Tori Spelling, Reginald VelJohnson from “Family Matters”, and “Bachelorette” Jenn Tran. Two other contestants — Anna Delvey and Olympic “pommel horse guy” Stephen Nedoroscik — had already been revealed as part of this year’s cast.

Demi Moore isn’t very pumped about a possible remake of her 1990 movie “Ghost”. Over the years, there have been talks about re-creating the iconic romance, most recently with Channing Tatum, who announced his plans to re-do the film last year. Moore, who starred in the original alongside Patrick Swayze, said to Variety: “There are some films better left alone, but it depends on what the take is. Moore feels the success of Ghost is thanks to the movie’s “alchemy”, and gave props to other cast-members including Whoopi Goldberg and Tony Goldwyn, who played the villain. But, Moore said, “Channing is incredibly intelligent and talented — who knows what he would bring to it if it happened.”

Grandmas, it might be time to lock up your jewelery box – because Gen Z has decided that brooches are back. That’s right, the once-dated accessory pin is fast-becoming a hot item for style on the street, and on red carpets and runways. Second-hand retail site The RealReal is reporting sales increases on brooches over the past 2 years, and a spokesperson notes that buyers aren’t just wearing them as a traditional holiday accessory, but expanding their use to everyday wear, such as “clipping the brooch on (a) scarf to close it” or pinning it to a suit lapel. And on the fall and winter runways, beloved Gen Z brands such as Tory Burch, Miu Miu and Schiaparelli pinned glittering brooches to lapels, coats and sheer blouses. One creative director believes the brooch’s new-found popularity among the young is “driven by a reimagined vintage kind of fashion.”

Experts say the possibility of hydrogen-powered flight means greater opportunities for fossil-free travel, and the technological advances to make this happen are moving fast. New studies from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden show that almost all air travel within a 750-mile radius (1200 km) could be made with hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2045, and with a new heat exchanger currently in development, that range could be even further. Professor Tomas Grönstedt said “the commercialization of hydrogen flight can go really fast now. As early as 2028, the first commercial hydrogen flights in Sweden could be in the air”, and 30-40% of global aviation will be powered by hydrogen by 2050.

Are CDs on their way back? Well, they’re definitely on their way back into a new Subaru, as a “throwback” option. The latest generation WRX has a number of ‘finishing touches’ available, allowing buyers to add all manner of extras, such as mud flaps, an engine underguard, and a first aid kit. But the most interesting – at least for 90s kids – is the optional CD player, neatly fitted under the center console’s armrest. Of course, with the shift to downloads and streaming services, not many manufacturers even offer a CD option anymore, but if you still have some discs kicking around, Subaru’s $375 CD Player Kit might be worth splashing out on. On the other hand, you could instead select the “automatic transmission” option for just $300

Could “contra-dating” help more people find love? You may have seen the term used on social media and dating sites. It’s defined as intentionally dating people outside or even the opposite of your “normal type.” It’s the practice of being open to people whom you normally would not even consider, which, in turn, could significantly increase your dating pool. Experts say it’s a good idea, as long as you don’t contra-date someone who has conflicting core values to yours. Apparently, many of us have been missing that “special someone” because our primary focus is on our idea of the ‘perfect’ facial features, hair or skin color, or body type.

The McDonald's McRib is a popular choice for fast-food lovers, but those who indulge in the saucy sandwiches might want to be aware of the fact that they're made with a lengthy list of ingredients. According to Time, the McRib contains 70 ingredients, 34 of which are in the bun alone. And while you might assume that these ingredients are spices or other natural food-related flavors, anyone who eats one of these sandwiches will also be ingesting azodicarbonamide, a flour-bleaching agent used in the production of foamed plastics for things like gym mats and the soles of shoes.

Will the next movie from Tolkien’s fantasy series be “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the Wizard”? Ian McKellen said he’d be happy to play ‘Gandalf’ again. And the actor, who played the beloved grey pilgrim in the first 3 films, as well as the “Hobbit” movies, has revealed there is already some magic at work to bring him back. McKellen said he had been told “there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved, and they hope that I’ll be playing him.” The 85-year-old, who recently suffered a serious fall while performing in a stage production, said he doesn’t know when a new film might enter production, but “They better be quick!”

Starting 5”, the Netflix basketball series following Lebron James, Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, Domantas Sabonis and Jayson Tatum has been confirmed, with an October 9 premiere. Modeled after “Quarterback”, Starting 5 provides a behind-the-scenes look at the 2023-24 NBA season through the eyes of 5 of the league’s biggest players. The streamer says it “captures their battles on and off the court as they chase greatness, push through injuries, and balance the demands of family and legacy.” Peyton Manning and Barack and Michelle Obama are listed among the Executive producers.

China has released its first-ever major video game “Black Myth: Wukong”. The theme of the adventure game is rooted in Chinese mythology, and after 6 years of development, it has taken off like…well…like Chinese fireworks! Need proof? Check this out:

Its developer, Game Science, sold 10 million copies in 83 hours, making it one of the fastest-selling games ever.

The game was so hotly-anticipated that some China-based workplaces gave workers time off to play.

In Black Myth’s first 24 hours, it became the most-played single-player game on Steam and the second-most-played game on the platform overall.

The game Black Myth turned profitable on Day 1 — and made $450 million in its first 3 days.

Players have found the graphics so appealing that there has been a real-life rush to the sites of the temples and shrines featured in the game. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mvaa5bbk

Adele played her final show in Munich on Saturday, and the structure, which has a capacity of 74,000 may be used in the future for shows around the world. Apparently, the arena was built in just a few weeks, and it “wouldn’t be hard” to take it down and re-build it in a different city, according to a music insider quoted in The Sun. The advantage for an artist to use the portable venue for a residency is the chance to create more impressive staging that doesn’t have to be moved from stadium to stadium, similar to the ABBA Arena constructed in London for its digital “Voyage” concert residency.

THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John

My wife and I have been married for over thirty years. We have kids who have grown up and moved away. We have grand children who come to visit once in a while, but most of the time it's just the two of us. We had a dog, but our dog passed away last year. I noticed that my wife and I spend much of our days doing different things. I feel like we have different interests and it seems like we barely even talk anymore. She seems angry with me most of the time lately. I'm not sure what I can do fix that. She gives me a little honey do list once in a while. I do the list and move on. I usually don't even know if she notices that I finished her projects. Some good friends of ours just went through a divorce. It was hard to watch that happen to someone else. I can't imagine what it would be like to go through that. I want to do something big to show my wife I still love her, but I don't know what that should be. We're OK financially. I thought a trip somewhere might be nice. I know she would love a trip to Greece and that area. I'm thinking it would be a nice surprise, but the last time I did something big, I surprised her by buying her a car. She had mentioned how much she liked the look of the car, so I traded in her car when she was visiting our son. When she came home she was upset that her car was gone. She said I should have discussed it with her first, but then it would not have been a surprise! Now I'm concerned to try to surprise her with a trip because it's also a big expense. What do I do? Blow the surprise with a discussion? Risk blowing the whole trip with a surprise?

Signed

Happy Hubby

Scientists have long-recognized the power of the mind when it comes to healing. But now, researchers say they have found that placebo pills can actually help — even when a patient knows they’re taking a placebo. In the just-published study, carried out during the height of the pandemic, scientists from Michigan State University, Miami University, and the University of California-San Francisco looked into how these “honest pills” (placebos) could be used to provide relief before patients are forced to turn to prescription meds. Two groups of people were assembled, both of which reported moderate levels of stress related to COVID-19. One group was given placebo pills, which they were aware of, and the other was not given pills. After just 2 weeks, the placebo group reported significant reductions in COVID-related stress, lower overall stress levels, and fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression, compared to the other group. The researchers say the result challenges the long-held belief that placebos only work when people are deceived about receiving active treatment.

Apparently, there’s even an app for THIS: “Timeleft” promises to schedule dinner for you and 5 strangers, if you’re into that kind of thing. The app’s developers say that making new friends as an adult can be tough, and it aims to tackle “big-city loneliness” one meal at a time, and is now available in almost 50 countries, including the US and Canada. When you sign up, Timeleft asks questions about your job, personality, lifestyle and dietary preferences, then matches you with 5 supposedly compatible diners. Dinners take place at 7pm on a Wednesday and cost $16 to book. Those who are scheduled to dine together don’t know who they will be meeting until the night before, when the app reveals your dining partners’ industries and zodiac signs. The restaurant is shared the next morning. To help spark conversation, the app unlocks an icebreaker game once the date begins. And after dinner, everyone in that city who has been on a Timeleft date is invited to an after-party at a local bar, where they are able to meet even more strangers.

Wendy’s will also reportedly be selling a “Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty”, featuring the restaurant’s “Vanilla Frosty swirled with Pineapple Mango puree.” The boob-tube-inspired food will only be available until Nov. 11.
