SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH: Brought to you by BetterCreditCards.com

This might not come as a surprise to you if you’ve ever endured an all-night study session, or a marathon meeting at work, but now science agrees: Thinking hard hurts. Radboud University researchers found that mental effort can be conclusively linked to unpleasant feelings, which they say may challenge some peoples’ assumptions about the joys of intellectual pursuits. Their study, an analysis of 170 separate research projects, found that no matter what the mental task is, from healthcare workers developing new technologies to athletes honing their golf swings, the result was always the same: the harder people had to think, the more unpleasant they found the experience. So why do we do it? The scientists concluded that perhaps “people choose mentally effortful activities despite the effort, not because of it.”

Jimmy Kimmel says he’s not sure if there will be any TV late-night shows left in 10 years. The comedian, who spent much of 2022 pondering whether he would continue hosting “Jimmy Kimmel Live” before signing a new, 3-year deal, revealed that one of the reasons he re-upped is that he was “worried” about what to do next. On his podcast, Kimmel said by the year 2034, “Maybe there’ll be one (late night show), but there won’t be a lot of them.” Why? There is so much content these days, and “now people can watch anything at anytime”. Kimmel said that while “It used to be Johnny Carson was the only thing on at 11:30pm and so everybody watched.” He also pointed out that people can easily catch late night hosts’ monologues the next day, so there is no “need to watch it when it’s on the air”.

The Toronto Film Festival has unveiled speakers for its 2024 edition next month, including discussions with Cate Blanchett, Zoe Saldaña and Steven Soderbergh. SCOOP OF THE DAY: Brought to you by BetterCreditCards.com

Artificial intelligence requires so much power it’s straining the electrical grid in some areas. AI queries require about 10 times the electricity of traditional Google queries, according to the Electric Power Research Institute. And emerging AI capabilities such as audio and video generation are likely to add to this energy demand. In fact, the energy needs of AI are requiring energy companies to recalibrate their future projections, and even to explore previously unheard-of options, such as restarting a nuclear reactor at the Three Mile Island power plant, which has been dormant since the infamous disaster in 1979.

NASA has unveiled an experimental aircraft they hope will help achieve a net-zero aviation emissions goal by 2050. In a $725 million partnership agreement, Boeing will construct the full-scale prototype aircraft featuring extra-long, thin wings supported by diagonal struts — a design known as the Transonic Truss-Braced Wing concept. This new X-plane is anticipated to inspire a new generation of sustainable single-aisle aircraft, the backbone of passenger airlines globally. Scientists say it’s a vital step in addressing climate change.

It just might be the best of both worlds. Oreo and Coca-Cola have announced 2 new collaborations. Beginning Sept. 9, these will show up on store shelves: an Oreo-inspired Coca-Cola soda and a Coke-inspired Oreo cookie. That’s right: The iconic brands teamed up to create the perfect snacking duo using one another’s flavors. The Coca-Cola Oreo Zero Sugar is said to taste like the OG Coke, but with the sweet addition of flavors inspired by Oreos. And Oreo Coca-Cola Sandwich cookies will have both the classic ‘cookies and cream’ flavor mixed with sweet Coke. Packages will come with a classic chocolate cookie—infused with Coca-Cola syrup—and a red-colored golden cookie sandwiched with traditional white-colored creme.

ANIMAL MYTHBUSTING: (PART THREE)

Toads give you warts: Let’s just get this one out of the way first. They can’t.

Lemmings engage in mass suicide: They don’t plunge off cliffs en masse into the sea below. The truth is that lemmings sometimes move as a herd to find more food, and when they cross bodies of water, some don’t make it.

Sloths are lazy: Yes, they are excruciatingly slow, but this is due to a very low metabolic rate, which means they need to conserve energy for survival—not because they’re unmotivated.

Elephants are scared of mice: Research has consistently showed that elephants don’t find mice particularly threatening. But like humans, they don’t like it when little things scurry out and take them by surprise.

Turtles don’t feel their shells: The top layer of most turtle shells is made of keratin, like our fingernails. And just as we can experience pain through our fingernails, so do turtles feel pain in their shells.

Birds abandon their babies if you touch them: Birds are better parents than we give them credit for. Feel free to return a fallen baby bird to its nest.

Bulls can’t see red: Surprise! Despite the common belief that the choice of a matador’s cape is actually arbitrary, because cattle are supposedly color-blind, bulls can discriminate some colors and shades, and have been shown to charge more forcefully when the object in question is a warm color.

Armadillos curl up into balls and roll away from predators: Actually, only 2 species of armadillo can roll up into balls at all. And they don’t roll away – it’s simply a way of using their armor to protect themselves.

Each lion pride has a king: Prides actually tend to be led by females, and it’s never a single “queen.” Lionesses form a sort of sisterhood. They have babies around the same time and raise them together.

Horses only sleep standing up: While they are good at grabbing some ZZZs while standing, they lie down when deeper sleep is needed, and will only do so when they are able to relax in a comfortable, safe place.
