Cutting kids’ screen time to just 3 hours per week can result in significant improvements to their mental health and behavior in as little as 2 weeks, a new study shows. The study, out of the University of Southern Denmark, involved 89 families with 181 children between 4 and 17 years old. After just 14 days of a reduced screen time regimen, researchers found that these children experienced a decrease in behavioral difficulties equivalent to moving from the “borderline” category to the “normal” category. It suggests that even a brief period of reduced screen time can have measurable benefits for children’s mental health. The researchers point out that the 3-hour limit applies specifically to leisure screen time, and doesn’t include screen use for school or homework.

The most famous dino of them all, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, may have been way larger than scientists thought. The iconic predator, which roamed North America 66-68 million years ago, has long captivated scientists and the public with its massive size and fearsome reputation. But new research published in the journal Ecology and Evolution took a fresh look at the T. Rex’s maximum size. The largest-known T. Rex skeleton, nicknamed “Scotty,” is estimated to have weighed about 8,900kg (19,555lbs) when alive. New findings suggest that the biggest T. Rexes could have tipped the scales at a staggering 15,000kg (33,069 pounds) – about 70% heavier than Scotty!

A company is selling an all-in-one combination phone, fitness tracker – and vape, of all things. The Swype vape phone is designed “to keep you connected and entertained, while providing a premium vaping experience,” says the company. The Swype vape phone can connect to several apps — such as Facebook, X and WhatsApp – and users are able to receive texts and notifications on its touch screen by connecting to your existing phone via Bluetooth. It can also be used to play video games, and can be personalized with different wallpapers. But one thing the Swype CAN’T do is make phone calls. To connect the device, users need to download an app on their primary phone. Priced at around US $20, the interactive device comes prefilled with nicotine flavors like Blue Raspberry, Gum Mint and Pina Colada, has 3 strength levels, and is disposable after about 30,000 puffs. Although we often hear that exercising before bed is a bad idea, because it is said to affect your ability to drift off quickly, researchers are saying that doesn’t mean you should meld into the couch and binge -watch TV for a few hours, fearing that the slightest movement might ruin your shuteye. In fact, the opposite is true: Getting up for short bursts of light activity (like, maybe during commercial breaks) could help you sleep better. Researchers at New Zealand’s University of Otago found that breaking up prolonged periods of sitting in the evening with brief sessions of simple exercises extended test participants’ sleep time by nearly half an hour.

The Olympics aren’t the only tremendously exciting attraction in Paris these days (I mean, sure, there’s also the Eiffel Tower, but stay with me here…). France’s first cheese museum opened in June in the City of Light. The Musée du Fromage is billed as “an educational and interactive space for discovering France’s cheesemaking heritage and regions.” The savory museum, where cheese is made daily, is housed in a 17th-century stone building a short walk from Notre Dame Cathedral. Founder Pierre Brisson created it to help keep the art of cheesemaking alive in France, which boasts 56 regional varieties made from cow, sheep and goat milk.

Ick. “The ick” is now officially a thing. And by ‘a thing’ I mean it has made it into the dictionary. The ick is among the 3,200 new additions in the newest version of the Cambridge Dictionary, which definitely includes some Gen Z slang words that are going to make some of us feel old. In addition to the ick, which is “the sudden feeling that you dislike someone or something or are no longer attracted to someone because of something they do”, here are some of the other new additions to the Cambridge Dictionary…
• Boop: Popularized in “Schitt’s Creek”, it refers to a gentle hit or touch on a person’s or animal’s nose or head, showing that you like them, or as a joke.” (I was booping long before Schitt’s Creek was!)
• Face Journey: A series of expressions that appear on someone’s face showing different emotions that they are experiencing as a reaction to something. (Ah! Like my wife when she does our teenage boy’s laundry!)
• Chef’s kiss: When you put your fingers and thumb together, kiss them, then pull your hand away as a way of showing that you think of something or someone as excellent. (Not to be confused with “Kiss the chef”!)
• Speedrun: This gaming term means “to complete a computer game as quickly as possible”, but offline, it means “to complete something much faster than it is usually done.”
• Side Quest: This gaming term means “a part of a computer game that has its own aim and story but is not part of the main game”, but IRL it means “an activity that is done in addition to another activity and is less important than it.” (Keep your ‘side-chick’ jokes to yourself!)
• IYKYK: IYKYK (Enough said!)
