THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John

I invited my family to my house for a birthday party. Almost everyone will be here. I have an estranged wicked step sister. She has been horrible to me my whole life and I've always stepped up and kissed her butt so we could make it work. A few years ago I finally had enough, so when she was being here horrible self, I didn't rise above to treat her like a special little princess. I just let her spew her hatred and I moved on. Now, three years later, I invited her adult son to join the rest of the family for this birthday party. Initially he said he was excited to get together with everyone, then he sent a follow-up message saying he would not feel comfortable coming to my house until his mother and I have a chance to patch things up. My reply was “I'm sad to hear that, we will miss you”. I don't need to apologize for her actions. I'm not going to do that anymore. Life is too short for me to tippy toe around my evil wicked step sister. Now she is trying to turn the rest of the family against me too. Luckily, most of them are smart enough to know that she is the problem. Do I try to get my nephew to see things from my perspective or not? My husband told me my response should have been “when your mom wants to apologize, she has my number”. DO I leave this alone, or should I reach back out to my nephew? I miss him and I think he would have fun at the party with the entire rest of the family.

Signed

It’s not exactly news that listening to music can result in a mood lift. But according to Chinese researchers, listening to classical music could actually be a powerful tool in treating depression, especially for those who haven’t responded well to other therapies. The scientists, at Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, say they discovered that the music lifts a person’s mood by improving connections between brain regions related to both sound and pleasure. This enhanced brain connectivity is associated with better mood outcomes. The researchers said it’s as if the music creates a harmonious symphony within the brain itself, helping to restore balance in areas disrupted by depression.

In the early 1900s, Lobster was considered the “cockroach of the ocean” and was synonymous with the poor – often eaten regularly by the homeless, slaves, and prisoners. It wasn’t until after World War II that lobster became considered a delicacy and food associated with the aristocratic classes.

Super Bowl TV ad time is almost sold out, even though the big game is almost 6 months away. Fox TV, which is slated to broadcast Super Bowl LIX from Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, has sold out all but a handful of slots of commercial inventory, according to media buyers familiar with recent negotiations. They also say that Fox is using the heavy demand for the event to seek more than $7 million for a single 30-second commercial, and insists that anyone who wants to buy spots must now commit to an advertising package that includes time on other Fox properties to seal the deal.

After 25 years, Jason Biggs took advantage of his most memorable role for some tongue-in-cheek marketing. The “American Pie” star, who hosts Netflix‘s “Blue Ribbon Baking Championship”, joked “there were no pies harmed” while filming the baking competition series, which is “safe for family viewing”. He said to USA today: “I’ve really wanted to host something in the food world. Of course, there’s the wink at the camera and the audience with me as a baking show host. And whenever I can’t think of something to say, I always have a pie joke in my back pocket that brings the house down.” His 1999 breakout role in American Pie has long been known for the infamous scene detailing Biggs’ bumbling teen character’s high-jinks with an apple pie.

A Toronto man has come up with his possible solution to the homelessness crisis. Ryan Donais put together a prototype of a tiny house on wheels – attached to a bicycle. His “Tiny Tiny Homes” are intended to give those who are unhoused the ability to live comfortably – and move around. The builder was inspired by the wooden shelters that cropped up around the city in the earlier years of the pandemic, but thought he could improve on the idea by giving users the autonomy of being able to transport their homes – and themselves – at will. As he put it, unlike a tent or an encampment: “If they happen to wear out their welcome where they’re at, they can move along.” The Tiny Tiny Home includes a sofa, which folds into a bed, a butane cooktop, a fire and carbon monoxide detector, a fire extinguisher, and a solar panel that powers a lithium battery, to run the lights, fan and power inside. Future models will include heating and a portable toilet. He spent $5,000 of his own money (and 8 Saturdays) to building the prototype, and is in the process of crowdfunding to move into production. Australian Olympian and now-cult figure Rachel ‘Raygun’ Gunn, who went viral thanks to her almost non-existent breaking skills at the Paris Games, may have danced her way to millionaire status, experts say. That is, of course, if she wants any more attention. Gunn’s unexpected rise to fame, or infamy, depending on who you ask, came when, despite not securing a single vote from the judges across breakdancing battles, her participation sparked controversy and admiration, cementing her status as an Aussie cult icon. Marketing and public relations expert Max Markson said that Gunn already possesses “an enormous brand” and could potentially earn millions through international deals.

Canada’s largest annual fair, Toronto’s Canadian National Exhibition, got underway on Friday. And while some people go there for the rides and entertainment, others are just there for the food. Here’s a sampling of this year’s menu: (PART ONE)

Deep Fried Pickle Oreos: Just what it sounds like: 3 Oreo cookies, each sandwiching 2 dill pickle slices, fried in a shaved pickle batter and topped with cinnamon sugar and icing.

Deep Fried Cheese Curds (Taylor’s Version): Deep fried cheese curds topped with icing, cotton candy, crunchy candy bits and edible glitter. Comes with a “Curd Lover” friendship bracelet.

Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab on a Stick: Chow down on the whole crab – doused in sriracha mayo.

Deep Fried Butter Chicken Lasagna: A deep-fried slab of 8-layer lasagna with mozzarella, parmesan and ground butter chicken, in a slightly spicy butter chicken and tomato sauce.

Mac & Cheetos Popsicle: Fried mac and cheese conveniently served on a stick, and livened up with a Cheetos coating.

Kool-Aid Fried Chicken: Day-Glo red, deep-fried and generously topped, it boldly ventures into unfamiliar territory. (And we bet it’s refreshing!)

Cheeseburger Spring Rolls: More portable than your typical burger, this hand-rolled snack is stuffed with ground beef, cheese and dill pickles.

Spammy Tots: Features crispy sushi rice tots splashed with Aloha Shoyu soy sauce and topped with Spam fries, nori flakes, furikake and spicy mayo. (If I’m having this one, it’ll definitely be AFTER I hit the Mega Drop ride!)

Wasabi Ice Cream: Wasabi-flavored ice cream topped with crunchy orange sugar pearls and nori, served in a charcoal cone.
