THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John

My boyfriend and I are potentially moving in together. We found a place that's bigger than his current place, but it's more expensive too. We could make it work if we move in together, but he makes more money than I do, so should he pay more of the rent? He said we should split the rent 50/50, but I make way less than he does. Shouldn't I pay less? Right now I live with my parents and I'm OK staying here. My parents don't really want me to move in with my boyfriend anyway, but it's closer to where I work, and I'm sure I'll be there most of the time anyway, so it just makes sense to me. If I pay half of the rent though, most of my first paycheck will be gone. I get paid twice a month and I'd have to figure out how to survive on almost nothing for a few weeks each month. Any advice? I asked my parents and they told me I should just stay living with them, but they're old-fashioned. What do you think?

Signed

New research out of Scotland says that cyclists have a 47% lower risk of early death and a 10% lower risk of hospitalization for any reason, than commuters who drive or take the train. The study followed more than 82,000 UK residents over 18 years, who ranged in age from 16-74 at the beginning. Commuting by bike was associated with a 51% lower risk of dying from cancer, a 24% lower risk of hospitalization for heart disease and a 20% lower risk of being prescribed drugs for mental health problems.

A few years ago, a French scientist apologized after tweeting a photo of a slice of chorizo, claiming it was an image of a distant star taken by the James Webb Space Telescope. Étienne Klein, a celebrated physicist and director at France’s Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, shared the image of the spicy Spanish sausage, praising the “level of detail” it provided, considering that it is “located 4.2 light years away from us.”. After thousands retweeted and commented on his startling photo, Klein admitted the image was, in fact, a close-up of a slice of chorizo taken against a black background, and wrote: “no object related to Spanish charcuterie exists anywhere else other than on Earth.”

Someone call HBO a plumber. For the second season in a row, the season finale for “House of the Dragon” has leaked online. On Tuesday, 14 videos, totaling about 30 minutes from the finale for Season 2 of the “Game of Thrones” were posted by a TikTok user who has since been suspended. However, the videos were captured by others and have been posted to other sites including X and Reddit. No word yet on the source of the leak, but in 2022, when the Season 1 finale showed up on torrent sites, HBO said that a “distribution partner” somewhere in Europe, the Middle East or Africa was responsible.

Rob Lowe is teasing a sequel to the 1985 classic “St. Elmo’s Fire.” Almost 40 years since the coming-of-age film was released, Lowe said on “Entertainment Tonight” that the project is in the “early stages” of development. While promoting his Netflix show “Unstable”, Lowe said: “We’ve met with the studio, and I have been talking about doing it for about 4 months.” Lowe, who is now 60, starred alongside Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy in the original, which followed 7 friends navigating life and friendships after college graduation.

OK, ‘Girl Math’ ladies, it’s your moment of retribution! An economics expert says that the recent social media trend of women making fun of themselves for the “crazy” mathematics they do when it comes to spending, saving, and other rationalizations, aren’t as crazy as they – and others – might think. In fact, some aspects of girl math are actually fundamentally sound mathematic concepts, says Concordia University economics professor Moshe Lander. For example, the ‘girl math’ claim that “If I buy an item for $100 and wear it 10 times, it only cost me $10 per wear”, is correct. That’s an example of ‘average cost’. And if you notice toilet paper is 30% off, so you buy a year’s supply, you are bargain shopping, which is a good strategy. What girl math does NOT fly? If you think that by underspending on your budget this week, you can then overspend next week. Well, that may be girl math, but it’s not good math. It’s like being on a diet and saying to yourself that since you didn’t use all your calories this week, you can pig out next week. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way.

It is no secret that every moment you spend online is being tracked. Google, Facebook and Amazon are a few of the culprits. But WebXray, a new tool made by a former Google Engineer, is trying to help. WebXray is a new search engine that anyone can use to see how websites are tracking you. You can enter a text string, like “cancer” or “pregnancy,” then see which websites are giving info to Google AdSense. Tim Libert came up with the idea after leaving Google with big concerns about privacy on the web, much of which is now illegal, but is still being done by many companies.

You’ve definitely heard people complaining about the rising cost of a traditional fast food hamburger meal lately. But those prices haven’t quite reached this level yet. A New York restaurant called Sip & Guzzle is offering a $150 cheeseburger – that’s served on a golden platter. Named the “Royale With Cheese” (probably inspired by the movie “Pulp Fiction”), the souped-up sammie was recently described by a food critic as the “fanciest cheeseburger you’re ever going to eat”. And that’s exactly what it sounds like: The Royale With Cheese features A5 Miyazaki wagyu tenderloin (the highest-graded beef in the world), and is topped with aged white cheddar. It is seasoned with minced onions, a special wasabi-based barbecue sauce, smoked soy sauce, brown sugar, tomato and rice vinegar, and shio koji (a Japanese condiment). Rather than serve this boujee burger in a bun, the Royale is wrapped in shokupan milk bread, which is flown fresh from a bakery in LA, and it’s all served in a golden bento-like box. One influencer described the fancy sammie as “cheesy, dreamy, meaty wagyu goodness.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mryybcns
