In a world where experts are leaving no stone unturned in their search for sustainable energy sources, researchers at Concordia University say they may have found an unlikely hero: microscopic algae. They have come up with a promising new technology called micro-photosynthetic power cells that harness the natural processes of these tiny organisms to generate electricity. In addition, they claim to have found a way to dramatically increase the power output of these miniature green energy factories – simply by linking them together, like a series of batteries. And it gets better: This method not only has the potential to produce clean energy, it can also remove carbon from the atmosphere in the process.

The
annual flu shot could soon be a thing of the past. Scientists at
Oregon Health & Science University are working on a revolutionary
formula that might mean we’d only need one flu shot – ever.
That’s right: No annual vaccinations – OR worrying about whether
this year’s shot will match the flu strains circulating around the
world. Unlike traditional flu shots that target the virus’s outer
surface – which constantly changes – this approach focuses on the
virus’s internal structure. They compare it to targeting the engine
of a car instead of its paint job.

“American Idol” debuted a new video on “Good Morning America” yesterday, featuring career highlights of new judge Carrie Underwood, who is scheduled to appear and perform on the ABC morning show today. The video highlights Underwood’s career-making performances on Idol 20 years ago. Showrunner and exec-producer Megan Wolflick said of Underwood, who is the first American Idol alum ever to join the judging panel: “Her…superstar status as the most successful Idol winner…makes her a perfect fit for the show. She embodies the true spirit of Idol as she herself is the definition of the Cinderella story.” Underwood replaces Katy Perry on the judges panel, and will join Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan when the new season kicks off next spring. It’s almost back-to-school time, and in addition to all the preparation involved with getting your kids ready to head back to the classroom, there’s also the issue of the COST of back-to-school shopping. With that in mind, a new survey found that 3 in 4 parents say they’d try just about any hack to save money on school supplies – and for some, that even includes stealing from work – and dumpster-diving! The poll of 2,000 parents of elementary school kids in the US uncovered that the top tip parents have for keeping their back-to-school shopping costs under control is this: Purchasing school supplies whenever they go on sale – even if that means waiting until after the kids are back in class. Here are some other the other pearls of wisdom shared by veterans of the back-to school shopping scene:
• Hoarding school supplies throughout the year
• Extreme couponing
• Looking for half-used items around the home
• Joining buy-nothing groups on social media
• Trading supplies with other parents
• And yes, even dumpster diving, suggested by 5% of parents. 12% admitted to stealing supplies from their workplace to send to school with their kids.

Boston Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen just might become the first player in MLB history to play for both teams in the same game when Sox and Toronto Blue Jays resume their suspended contest on August 26. He started at catcher for the Blue Jays in their game vs. Red Sox on June 26. That game was put on hold in the 2nd inning due to rain. On July 27, the Jays traded Jansen to the Red Sox in exchange for prospects. The game that was in progress is scheduled to resume on Aug. 26, and if Jansen is utilized at any point in the remaining 7-plus innings (or in extra innings), he’ll be the first player in MLB’s 121-year history to appear in a game for both teams. Coincidentally, Jansen was at the plate for the Blue Jays, facing a 0-1 count, when the game was called. Naturally, he won’t be allowed to finish that at-bat.

Here are 4 types of naps, and how to choose which one is perfect for you…right…about…Zzzzz…
☞ “Power Nap.” For most, a classic “power nap” of 10-20 minutes in the early afternoon will help them shake off that post-lunch blahs, and feel OK for the rest of the day. This is great if you often feel lethargic for a few hours in the afternoon.
☞ “Coffee Nap”: If a short nap isn’t much help, try this. Drink a cup of coffee quickly, then lie down. It takes caffeine about 10 minutes to affect you, and about 45 minutes to reach peak concentration in your blood. That means you can get a power nap in, then wake up just as the caffeine hits, giving you an amplified sense of sharpness and clarity.
☞ “Convenient Nap”: Scheduling a nap is great, but what if your schedule is all over the place? An imperfect nap is better than no nap at all. Nap when the baby is sleeping, while on public transit, or during your lunch hour.
☞ “Performance
Nap”: If you have a stressful or physically demanding task coming
up, such as a presentation or a marathon, a short nap a few hours
ahead of time can definitely boost your performance.
