The delightful “gah-gahs” and “goo-goos” emanating from your baby’s crib might just seem like gibberish – or, well…baby talk…but a new study suggests that the sounds an infant makes are much more than random noise – they’re a crucial part of learning to talk. The research, published in PLOS One, used special software to look at the vocal patterns in 130 infants over the first year of their life. It found that rather than making haphazard sounds, then gradually progressing to more structured “baby talk” (as was believed), it seems that infants are actively exploring and practicing different categories of sounds right from the beginning of their lives. The research team categorized the sounds into 3 main types: squeals, growls, and vowel-like utterances (named “vocants”). And fascinatingly, these 3 types cropped up in babies of all ages, even in the first few months of life. Why is this important? The researchers believe this vocal exploration serves 2 purposes: First, babies may be priming their brains for the challenge of speech. And second, this “baby talk” may serve as a signal to caregivers that the baby’s development is on track and perhaps even a cue to engage the baby in some back-and-forth “conversation.”

Jodie Foster claims she is “not naturally an actor” and that the experience of a stalker coming to see her on stage, then shooting President Reagan to get her attention, is the reason she stopped performing live at age 18. In 1981, John Hinckley Jr. made the assassination attempt while Foster was a college student. In a conversation with Interview Magazine, she said: “It was a traumatic moment, and I’ve never admitted that maybe that has something to do with how I never wanted to do a play again.” She said the fact that Hinkley shot the president “in order to impress” her, and had written her letters, resulted in her being assigned bodyguards and being taken to a safe house.
Jennifer Lawrence has landed her next lead movie role. The “Hunger Games” star is set to star in the murder-mystery “The Wives”. She’ll also serve as a producer on the Apple TV+ project, which is said to be inspired by the “Real Housewives” franchise. Plot details are under wraps, though Michael Breslin and Patrick Foley, who wrote “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical”, will pen the script. No release date has been announced.
SCOOP OF THE DAY: Brought to you by BetterCreditCards.com
With more concerns arising these days about the use of social media among teens — and even younger kids, a US company says it has a solution: a kid-safe smartphone”. Pinwheel made its smartphone for kids available in Canada this week, aimed at the 8-14 crowd. It has features like photo-sharing, texting, games and “more than 1,200 apps available”. But Pinwheel says the phone also contains “age-appropriate guardrails”, such as no internet browser or social media, and parental monitoring tools which allow mom & dad to remotely monitor texts, designate contact lists, and set usage schedules. The Android phones are installed with Pinwheel’s operating system. A $20 monthly subscription fee is above and beyond the regular carrier plan, which also allows complete remote access to the phone. The company says their phones provide “a way to help kids develop healthy habits around digital device usage and screentime without the negative impacts and distractions of social media and open Internet access.” This week, the US Surgeon General asked for legislation that would stamp social media apps with a warning stating that social media “is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents”.

Not only are plants living things, researchers are now saying they also possess a form of intelligence. Findings published in the journal Plant Signaling and Behavior shows plants like goldenrods are “smart enough” to detect other plants nearby, without ever making contact. They are also smart enough to adapt to threatening situations, such as herbivores eating them. The Cornell University researchers even found that some species have the intellectual capacity for flexible, real-time adaptive responses. While plants do not have a brain, they do have vascular systems, which some biologists say are similar to our central nervous system, and can be used to process information.
