If you wish there were a way to burn more calories while walking, try changing up the length of your strides. New research has found that striding in an uneven cadence can be a game-changer for your fitness. A University of Massachusetts Amherst study looked into how non-uniform strides affect a person’s metabolism — a calorie-burning mechanism — during walks. It was found that varying the length of your steps can increase metabolism by 1.7%, which the researchers called “a modest, albeit significant role in the metabolic cost of walking.”

“Despicable Me 4” topped the box office last weekend. The film, the latest entry in the wildly successful franchise about a domesticated former supervillain, earned $47.6 million in its first 2 days of release, and a projected $122 domestically over the 5-day holiday — an impressive result for a production with a $100 million budget. “Inside Out 2” finally fell to #2 in its 4th weekend after joining the billion-dollar club last weekend, and “A Quiet Place: Day One” held on at #3.
Princess Leia’s itsy bitsy metal bikini from “Return of the Jedi,” is up for grabs at an upcoming auction, but it’s another “Star Wars” item going under the hammer that could command an out-of-this-world price. An on-screen model of a Y-wing starfighter could fetch $1 million, according to Heritage Auctions, which will kick off the 2-day sale July 25. The 27-inch resin and metal starfighter has a starting bid of $300,000. Leia’s famously skimpy outfit, which was a prototype for the scene when Princess Leia was Jabba the Hutt’s slave, has a starting bid of $30,000.
Cara Delevingne is thankful she was sober when her $7 million mansion burned down in March. In an interview with The Times, she said: “It sucks but everyone was safe and…if I’d not been sober I would still be reeling over that.” Her LA home caught fire March 15, while she was in London for her stage role as Sally Bowles in “Cabaret”. Delevingne had stopped drinking and doing drugs after a rehab stint before the fire, and said: “I used to think drugs and alcohol helped me cope . . . but they didn’t, they kept me sad and super depressed. I feel like I’ve got my power back and I’m not being controlled by other things.”

Research shows plants can do a form of arithmetic.
A clean-up crew tasked with clearing Mount Everest of decades worth of trash left behind by climbers says the job is going to take years. The crew of soldiers and Sherpas, funded by the government of Nepal, has so far removed 11 metric tons (24,000lbs) of garbage, 4 dead bodies and a skeleton from Everest. And Ang Babu Sherpa, the leader of the sherpa team, estimates there could be as much as 50 tons (110,000lbs) still up there…at the highest camp on the mountain alone. What kind of garbage do climbers leave behind? Mostly old tents, some food packaging and gas cartridges, oxygen bottles, and ropes – in addition to garbage “in layers and frozen”, Babu said. In recent years, Nepal has required that climbers bring back their garbage or lose their deposits, which has significantly reduced the amount of garbage left behind.

WEIRD NEWS: Brought to you by WeirdGiftOfTheDay.com
It has often been said that hardcore sports fans “live and die” with the fortunes of their team. So maybe it makes sense that the University of Nebraska is considering the idea of allowing super fans of its football team to buy plots to be buried underneath the stadium. The proposal is a fundraising idea, in which the school would sell spots in a burial columbarium, which would be used to inter the ashes of departed fans underneath the 85,000-seat Memorial Stadium. The school is facing a $58 million budget shortfall, and is looking to raise funds in any way possible. And before you dismiss the idea as dead in the water…err…dead in the stadium, be aware of the levels of dedication among some US football fans: The people of Green Bay, Wisconsin have been warned that dumping human ashes on their field can result in a fine of over $1,300. That happened after a Philadelphia Eagles fan ran onto the playing surface of Lincoln Financial Field during a game, and spread his mother’s ashes there.

A Reddit user recently asked: “What disappeared silently and nobody noticed?” And people were happy to jump on the nostalgia train. Here are some of the things they had to say…
⇒ “Those shoes with the little wheels in them.”
⇒ “Pay phones.” (Well, duh!)
⇒ “Do ringtones even still exist? I just realized that whenever my phone rings, it buzzes silently.”
⇒ “The prizes in cereal boxes.”
⇒ “3D TVs and to a lesser extent, 3D in cinemas. For a while, so many movies in the cinema had a 3D option.”
⇒ “AOL messenger (and ICQ).” (OK, Boomer!)
⇒ “So much in games: cheat codes, unlockable cosmetics, and downloadable content that isn’t just a veiled micro-transaction.”
⇒ “Lifetime licenses — everything is a subscription now.”
⇒ “Does anyone remember the coin-operated horses outside of grocery stores? I suddenly realized they’re nowhere to be found now.”
⇒ “Voiceovers in movie trailers. For some reason, I can’t think of when exactly they died out. I just remember that they were a thing, and then they weren’t.”
