You might think that when it comes to facial attractiveness, eye color might be among the strongest factors. Not so, says new research. But oddly, the size of your irises is. A study published in the journal Cognition determined that people appear more attractive when their irises are expanded, showing more brightness in their eyes. The iris is the colored part of the eye that surrounds the pupil. Pupil size is controlled by autonomic bodily functions, usually triggered by changes in light. Researchers also found that eye color had no significant bearing on perceived attractiveness.

You can learn the High Valyrian language from Game of Thrones with an online course. HBO Fans of George R.R. Martin's best-selling books and HBO's hit series Game of Thrones will be able to tell you that High Valyrian is the Latin-like language used in formal circumstances by the fictional nobility of Essos and Westeros. And while the stories may be make-believe, the language is a fully developed form of communication that you can learn yourself thanks to an online course from Duolingo. By the end, you'll be able to say phrases in High Valyrian like "kirimvose" (thank you) and "avy jorrāelan" (I love you), as well as "bantis zōbrie issa se ossȳngnoti lēdys" (the night is dark and full of terrors).

Ryan Reynolds has finally revealed the name of his and Blake Lively’s 4th child — Olin! No word on Olin’s gender yet, though. The “Deadpool & Wolverine” star made the announcement during the movie’s premiere in New York on Monday. While speaking to the crowd ahead of the hotly anticipated screening, Reynolds said: “I want to start by saying thank you to my wife, Blake, who is here. I want to thank my kids, James, Inez, Betty, Olin, who are here. I hope that, if I’m lucky, this moment will be the most traumatic thing — that is, the contents of this movie — that happens in your wondrous life.” Olin was born in February 2023.

Want more Blake and Ryan news? OK! As “Deadpool & Wolverine” hits theaters this Friday, Blake Lively has added more fuel to the fire that she is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She sent the internet into a tailspin by posting a photo from the set of the film, showing her kissing Reynolds, who is in full ‘Deadpool’ costume, while she wears a top and arm warmer in a similar shade. Fans immediately took notice, with many pointing out that this could be a clue that she’ll be playing ‘Lady Deadpool’ in the movie. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4rzcr8z2

SCOOP OF THE DAY: Brought to you by BetterCreditCards.com

What does it take to get great grades in high school, college, or university these days? For starters, it might help if your last name starts with the letter “A”, it seems. A study by researchers at the University of Michigan, analyzing over 30 million grading records, found that students with surnames that appear earlier in the alphabet tend to receive higher grades compared to those with later alphabetical placements. This is attributed to an effect known as “sequential grading bias.” That’s an unintended result of the default alphabetical order of student submissions in most online learning management systems. That means that kids with surnames landing in the earlier part of the alphabet have their tests and reports graded first, and may receive better marks, before instructors grow weary, or marking trends are established. The researchers suggest that random grading orders and anonymous submissions could help correct this bias.

New research shows that reading the news is increasingly becoming an “OK Boomer” thing. Gen Zers trying to stay informed prefer to have others digest the headlines first — and then not only regurgitate stories on social media, but help them decide what to think, too. A Google study shows younger newshounds are relying on posts from their favorite influencers — and the opinions of others in the comment sections — as opposed to the usual traditional news sources. The findings were announced on the heels of several studies showing that Gen Z – and an increasing number of older adults — are turning to TikTok as their top source for news.

It looks like the end of the line for those plastic, air-filled little “pillows” that Amazon uses to protect your deliveries. The company announced last week that it has eliminated 95% of the single-use box fillers from its packaging in North America – and will probably be done with them world-wide by the end of this year. Amazon has replaced the plastic buffers with recycled paper, which it says is not only easier to recycle, it also does a better job protecting your stuff. In April, a conservation group estimated that Amazon created 208 million pounds of plastic waste in 2022 – in the US alone.

STRANGE SPORTS THAT WERE ONCE PART OF THE SUMMER OLYMPICS:

The 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony is tomorrow. If you think the new-to-the Olympics sport of breakdancing is odd, check out these events, which were once a part of the proceedings…

Tug of War: It was an event at 5 games between 1900-20. If neither team succeeded to pull the other over the line after 5 minutes, a winner was declared based on who performed the best.

Club Swinging: An event twice, in 1904 and 1932. Participants would perform a routine by swinging clubs that looked like bowling balls.

Running Deer: In the early 1900s, competitors shot at a deer-shaped target which would move, or “run,” a distance of 75 feet.

Dueling Pistols: In 1906, this bizarre event saw competitors shoot wax bullets at human-shaped targets dressed in long coats from a 20 or 30-meter distance.

Fencing With Sticks: A one-time event in 1904, “Singlestick” was similar to fencing, but the weapon was a rounded wooden stick, about 34 inches long. (So – hockey?)

Plunge for Distance: In 1904, this event saw competitors dive into a pool, then try not to move at all until one minute was up, or until they naturally floated to the surface. (It made for an incredible spectator experience…)

Solo Synchronized Swimming: Between 1984-92, the intent was for the swimmer to synchronize their movements to music. The solo Olympic sport has since evolved into a team effort now known as Artistic Swimming.
