People who are facially expressive are more well-liked and socially successful, say scientists at Nottingham Trent University. Their research, involving more than 1,300 people, found that those who move their faces more during conversations are better-liked by others, considered more agreeable and extraverted, and can even fare better in negotiations. The researchers say the results show that facial expressivity can work as a social glue that fosters liking, cooperation and smoother interactions, because these faces are considered more “readable”, or easier to decipher for others, and generally are seen to appear more friendly.

The Avengers have re-assembled. High-profile members of the cast of 2012’s “The Avengers” reunited recently to record the movie’s dialogue in Lakota, the language spoken by the Lakota people of the Sioux tribes. The effort was spearheaded by activist actor Mark Ruffalo, who produced the 2022 documentary “Lakota Nation vs. United States.” Ruffalo, who played ‘The Hulk’ in the Marvel movies, said that the project, which was a “fun thing”, came about due to his “relationship with the Lakota people.” It saw Ruffalo reunite with Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans, who each rerecorded their character’s dialogue alongside Lakota actors, who recorded dialogue for lower-profile characters.

McDonald’s is pulling the plug on the artificial intelligence ordering technology it was testing at more than 100 drive-thrus in the US, after the systems repeatedly annoyed guests by fumbling orders and mistaking instructions. As evidenced in social media videos, the AI, called the “Automated Order Taker,” made frustrating mistakes, like adding ketchup, bacon, and butter packets to ice cream orders, serving up 9 sweet teas instead of one, and adding hundreds of dollars worth of chicken nuggets to an order. McDonald’s said “a voice-ordering solution for drive-thru will be part of the restaurants’ future”.

Universal, the biggest music company in the world, has signed a deal with AI start-up Soundlabs to create what it calls “official ultra-high fidelity vocal models for artists using their own voice data for training”. What does this mean? Basically, singers signed to the label can train AI models using their own voices, so that, Jon Bon Jovi, for example, could make a new album using AI-generated vocals without ever putting his own voice to tape. The company says artists will retain ownership of the results and will have full artistic approval on how they’re used.

Two Idaho men spent 1 hour, 8 minutes and 52 seconds passing a giant inflatable ball back and forth a total 7,827 times, to reclaim their Guinness World Record. David Rush, a serial Guinness World Record-breaker on a mission to hold the most records concurrently, teamed up with Seth Lemmons to recapture the record they originally set with 4,169 passes in 2021. The reclaimed record brings Rush’s current total of records to 179. He needs to hold 181 titles concurrently to take the top spot in the world.

THE LIST: Brought to you by BetterCreditCards.com

TOP MOVIES OF THE 1980S:

These are the era-defining films of the decade, according to a survey of multiple sources…

1. Raging Bull (1980): Not what you were expecting, I know. It contains one of the all-time-great feats of directing (Martin Scorsese) and one of the all-time-great feats of screen acting (Robert DeNiro).

2. Blade Runner (1982): Harrison Ford’s ‘Dekard’ is sent to kill 4 escaped androids, but falls in love with one of them. Like fine wine, this film gets better with age.

3. The Empire Strikes Back (1980): Rather than trying to recreate what worked in “Star Wars”, George Lucas and Co. pushed forward with their epic story, presenting huge character twists and a plot that arced toward an enormous cliffhanger.

4. The Shining (1980): Has there ever been a scarier movie than Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Steven King’s haunted-hotel novel? The famous climax—involving crazy-eyed Jack Nicholson and an axe, is actually less terrifying than the slow build that leads up to it.

5. Do the Right Thing (1989): Set over the course of one day on a single block, Spike Lee’s masterpiece about racial tensions in Brooklyn during a heatwave is at first hilarious, then devastating.

6. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981): Harrison Ford emerged as a leading man for the ages as ‘Indiana Jones’, the archaeologist-adventurer in Spielberg and Lucas’s globe-hopping saga. From the booby-trapped opening sequence to the Nazi-melting climax, it is pure Hollywood perfection. (Was the guy in EVERY movie that decade?)

7. When Harry Met Sally (1989): The ultimate rom-com. The story of Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan’s characters, which wavers for years on the line between love and friendship, is tender, timeless and funny.
