A good night’s sleep can be the cure for all sorts of ailments. And new research says it may also be the best medicine for loneliness. The National Sleep Foundation in Washington, DC found that getting a good night’s rest helps people feel more connected to others. Specifically, the researchers found that better sleep health is linked to lower levels of emotional, social, and total loneliness. The effects were seen across adults of all ages. The US Surgeon General declared loneliness a public health crisis in 2023, comparing the health risks one could face from feeling lonely to the effects of smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day.

A 105-year-old grandma just earned a master’s degree from Stanford.

Makeup sales are up – and that’s not necessarily a good thing. The so-called “lipstick index” was named by Estee Lauder chairman Leonard Lauder in 2001. His theory was that during an economic downturn, women tended to purchase lipstick as “small pick-me-ups” while cutting back on more expensive things. Fast forward to now, and Sephora recently announced a record sales year, while research group Circana reported a 9% bump in prestige beauty sales. So, does this mean another recession? Possibly. But we might want to wait until we see how the gourmet chocolate-makers are doing. A writer for the Independent suggests that the term “indulgence index,” to include other small luxuries, like fancy chocolate, might be more accurate. Other products used as quirky economic indicators include men’s underwear, hair dye, and champagne, all of which tend to see a drop in sales during harder times.

It’s the new TikTok trend that you might not want to have anything to do with. The “no-spend” pledge encouragers users to cut-out all non-essential purchases for a set period – or a week, a month, or even a year. And while the intentions of the challenge are definitely honorable, such as to help break the habit of overspending, experts say that even the best of intentions can backfire. As Gregory Stoller, a professor at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, points out: “Why purchase non-essential products that you don’t need to begin with?” And besides, most financial experts say there is no shortcut to practicing good financial habits. Bottom line: Rather than hop on the latest extreme fad, everything comes back to “setting a budget and setting expectations”, said Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate.
