A very small percentage of the population can safely drive while talking on their phones, but chances are high that you are not one of them. In a study, psychologists identified a group of people who can successfully do two things at once. These people are called “super-taskers” — and you’re probably not one of them. The researchers (from the University of Utah) said super-taskers make up about 2.5 percent of the general population.

Marie Curie is the only person to earn a Nobel prize in two different sciences. The pioneering researcher won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 (shared with her husband) for her study of spontaneous radiation, and then won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911 for her work in radioactivity. That makes her one of just six recipients to receive multiple Nobel prizes, and the only person to receive it in two different sciences. (Chemical engineer Linus Paulding earned a Nobel Chemistry Prize and Nobel Peace Prize, but all other multiple winners received theirs in the same category).

Police came across the 9-meter-long (30-feet-long) craft last month while it was being built in Málaga, on southern Spain’s Costa del Sol, during a broader international drug operation involving five other countries and the European Union crime agency Europol. They sit low in the water to escape detection and rarely are able to fully submerge. The wider police operation against the alleged international smuggling ring netted hundreds of kilos of cocaine, hashish and marijuana in various places in Spain, with 52 people arrested. Copper door knobs are self-disinfecting. Copper and its alloys, such as brass, have long been popular materials for manufacturing door knobs. It turns out, this may not just because the metal's hue makes it look nice. In fact, the material has been found to kill bacteria. According to one study from the National College of Kathmandu in Nepal, "the metal ions denature protein of the target cells by binding to reactive groups resulting in their precipitation and inactivation. The high affinity of cellular proteins for the metallic ions results in the death of the cells due to cumulative effects of the ion within the cells." In other words, brass sterilizes the bacteria that can build up from all those (potentially unwashed) hands that grip it.

A Florida man who nearly hit a gas pump pulled out a package of “Dank Gummies” instead of his driver’s license to show a deputy who was trying to help him. Deputies said they were called to a gas station in Naples shortly before midnight on March 1st because witnesses said a suspicious man had nearly hit a gas pump and appeared to be under the influence. Records show Demecio Lopez saw the deputy and immediately asked for help calling AAA because his car wouldn’t start, even though the keys were not in the ignition at the time. Lopez said he didn’t have the keys to the vehicle but then rummaged through his pockets and pulled out the keys. The deputy then asked Lopez for his driver’s license so he started rifling through his pockets again and this time pulled out a small green package labeled “Dank Gummies” with “cannabis-infused” written on it as well. The deputy asked if Lopez just pulled out THC gummies and Lopez claimed it was normal candy but when he was asked to hand over the package, the deputy saw that it was labeled as containing 500 mg of THC. Deputies said Lopez also had a package of “Medicated Nerds ropes” that contained 400 mg of THC per rope. Lopez was taken into custody and a small baggie of cocaine was found on his person in addition to the THC-infused candies. (https://bit.ly/3eDSR6H)

Researchers (University of Missouri, Brigham Young University, Utah State University) found that married couples are happier if they share household responsibilities. The researchers surveyed 160 couples married for an average of five years with at least one child under age five. The more wives perceived that their husbands were participating in family work tasks, the better the relationships were for both spouses. Couples’ relationships also improved when wives felt that their husbands were close with their children. Couples don’t need to divide chores exactly equally in order to see benefits.

The human body literally glows. It might be hard to see with your naked eye, but everyone you pass by every day is literally glowing. The human body emits a small quantity of visible light ("visible" in the technical sense—the illumination is about 1,000 times less intense than levels of light that we would actually be able to see). Researchers in Japan used a special camera to track this glow and found that it fluctuates throughout the day, with the body emitting its lowest levels of light around 10 a.m. and highest at around 4 p.m., a rhythm the scientists attribute to the changes in one's metabolism.

The adults were in a small inflatable raft, floating about 100 yards from shore at Grant Park Beach in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Around 4:30 p.m., the fire department responded to a report that those in the raft were possibly in distress. Authorities deployed an inflatable rescue raft and made contact with the boaters. None of them were wearing life jackets, authorities said. Initially, they didn’t want the fire department’s assistance. They agreed to be escorted back to shore after they were educated on the dangers of being out on Lake Michigan in a small, inflatable raft without a personal floatation device. At the time of the incident, the air temperature was 55 degrees and the water temperature was 34 degrees. He was charged with four counts of lewd and lascivious behavior, one count of indecent exposure and one count of disorderly intoxication, according to Lee County online booking records. This is not the first time Howard has been arrested. According to a 2019 investigation by WBBH, taxpayers had spent $300,000 for Howard to spend more than 6,000 nights in jail. From April 2019 through August 2019, Howard spent 134 nights in jail, WBBH reported. According to Lee County booking records, Howard has been arrested 12 times since August 2019, including two times for indecent exposure and three times for trespassing. Howard’s record of arrests in Lee County stretch back to 1988, according to booking records. Howard remains in the Lee County Jail, according to booking records. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 12. (http://bit.ly/2OPA79o)

SCOOP OF THE DAY: Brought to you by RedCrossBlood.org

April 15 is not the most dreaded day of the year. That’s according to a survey of 1,000 people, which finds more people — 33 percent — dread visiting the dentist or doctor more than tax day. Only 15 percent said they hated April 15. Once again the IRS has pushed back the filing deadline. In 2021 it will be May 17.

When your mind draws a blank it probably means you’re under stress, according to a study of why we forget. Seems that stress plays an important role in how well our powers of observation and recall interact. Stressful situations like exams, courtroom testimony and job interviews can all affect our memory.

It really is one of the great debates: What is the right way to hang a toilet paper roll? Research shows you use less paper when you drape the end over the top of the roll, simply because it’s easier to see. You also don’t have to reach as far to grab the paper. Also, it’s more sanitary to pull from the front since you’re not touching the wall and leaving germs as you would when pulling from the back. And finally — and this is the biggie — hotels can’t be wrong.

Fingernails don't grow after you die. Despite what you may have seen on other lists of random trivia, your fingernails and hair do not, in fact, continue to grow after you die. To grow, these must have a steady supply of glucose, which is cut off after the heart stops beating, preventing any further growth. In fact, the skin around the hair follicles and nails dehydrates after death and partly retracts, which can make them appear longer.

German police say they have solved a nine-year-old burglary after DNA found on a half-eaten piece of sausage matched that of a man detained in France over an unrelated crime. Police in the western town of Schwelm said Thursday that the sausage belonged to the victim, and the suspect — a 30-year-old Albanian citizen — appeared to have helped himself to a bite during the March 2012 break-in. An accused murderer was mistakenly released from Rikers Island this week because of a clerical error. 26-year-old Christopher Buggs was awaiting trial in a 2018 Brooklyn murder when he was released on an unrelated criminal contempt case — for which the judge sentenced him to time served. The city’s Department of Correction confirmed that an inmate was prematurely released for the Otis Bantum Correctional Center on Monday. “We are aware of this incident and a full investigation into how this happened is underway,” the department’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Peter Thorne said in a statement. “Right now we are working with our law enforcement partners to return this‎ individual to custody.” Cops say that Buggs is about 5-foot-5 and 160 pounds. He is shown in a photo released by police with a scar on his cheek and a dollar-sign tattoo on his neck. He was arrested on February 3rd, 2018, in connection to the slaying of Ernest Brownlee, 55.
